The .zip package also contains miner software with it, AV's often mistaken them as viruses (false positives)
You can download any miner software you want from any other source if it makes you feel any better,
you are obviously allowed to extract the client only and not the contained mining package.

I was downloading the Windows/mac wallet and google chrome blocked it and flaged it as malware

Yeah do your own checks on virus total first but my wallet seems fine.

This coin does seem cheap for the block size and diff..... looks like some nice dev already really considering 1 day old.
