I think that will depend on how people search for more details about the project to not get a scam or misleading information. Many people do not want to dig deeper about the project instead of following what others suggest. That makes them pick the wrong project and in the end, the project is run away with the investor's money. So related to the sports star who wants to invest their income in crypto, they should search for more if the tokens offered are really good.
I doubt that "official" tokens of sports teams would be scams. After all the teams are there and they could be sued which is the biggest problem for any scammer.
