No one would want tell you all of that directly. People don’t want to look like they are a loser of even admit that they’ve made such a mistake before. Even when they make profit, many people just want to hide the truth.
I think it's better to hide one's financials anyway, it's good for one's own security. They may not mean to hide it, they may have simply not felt comfortable enough to share it.
I tell my friends lessons I have learned from my mistakes and what I feel should be right for them to do in situation (if they ask in first place), but not necessarily amounts involved, I feel there is no need to, it creates barrier between two parties as they might not be on same page which rarely is the case even in one's own family, sharing in such incompatibility breeds negative emotions, such as jealousy.
