There is nothing new about this actually. With or without covid, there are always scams around trying to make victims out of gullible people. And the scams are there targeting everyone, every single one who falls to their trap. The schemes are designed differently targeting fiat and crypto and other precious assets.

Why the need to particularly say "steal your money and launder it through the complex cryptocurrency ecosystem"? If only we can get the exact figures, the largest stolen amounts are not even converted into crypto. And most laundering are not really through crypto. We have heard so many times of billions and billions being laundered in fiat by professionals. Nitpickers!
They are doing this to scare people away from cryptocurrencies, it is obvious scammers are going to use their tricks to deceive people regardless of the form of money being used and I am sure there are many scams going around with fiat as well, but they are using that language to imply the market of cryptocurrencies has a higher degree of scams going around to disincentive people from investing in this market, they are doing this because as we know if the current system begins to crash there are not many places you can move your money to try to protect yourself from that crash, you either pick precious metals or cryptocurrencies and the market of precious metals can be controlled to a certain degree while this market is more resistant to their attempts of control.
Well said mate, both cryptoworld and real life world experienced being scammed by many people, well that is life, there are always negative and positive that we may experience, but you are the one who will decide which one you will get. Be knowledgeable enough so no one will fool you, everything happens for a reason.
To prevent negative things in your life, you should do some positive things,  it is not the thing "opposite attracts", in our life if we do positive things we will receive positive things as a result.
Always be careful on who are you talking to. Be wise enough to identify who is the devil and the angel one.

It is really hard to trust people nowadays, there are some scammers who uses good image just to fool people and persuade them to send money or crypto to them. During this pandemic, fundraising is very common most especially when we know people are suffering and some poor people needs help and support to survive this pandemic. There are some fundraising camp who seek for donation just to help other people but there are fundraisers who are legit and scammers. We need to be careful in sending money and giving help to support poor people, we should check the legitimacy of the said fundraising organization so that we will not be fooled by them. We should check their license or if they are connected to the authority or the government.

1.Spot imposters-I usually don't trust anyone online. The line "the ones who are close to you are the ones that will try to fool you" seems kinda paranoid to me.Do you mean that your closest friends and family will try to scam you?

2.Do online research.-I always do that. You have to be a complete retard in order to avoid doing this nowadays.

3.Caller ID-Usually,I don't talk with strangers about money.Even if I do,I don't give them any money.

4.I never pay upfront for promises, unless there's an option for refund(good old paypal is kinda handy). Grin

5.Yeah,double checking is a must.

I think they are not only going after the cryptocurrency scammers but also those who used the medium to steal from individuals and governments in respect of medical supplies. There have been news around the globe about a certain group of individuals that scammed over 1.5million € in the name of coronavirus kits. Hope they're all fished out of their hidings and made to face the wrought of the government, these guzs have bitten more than what they can chew. Meanwhile, hope the government find those who are involved and not going after the innocent.
They also should go after with the creator of fake donation email named after COVID saying it is for the people who are struck by the virus. I don't know why these people are happily scamming others in light  with hopelessness due to the pandemic, they are so cruel. But I know that everyone has had enough with this kind of environment So I assume that there is just only a few that will fall to those scams right?

For cryptocurrency holders, be more careful this times and double check all URL visit before proceeds for either sign up or long in. Also, downloading apps that's not from the right source. Stop hunting for $ that can easily land you into trouble, don't install apps that's from unknown source.
What I can suggest to my fellow crypto holders, just don't always open it, nothing will happen to it trust me if you have a secured network and application. Hunter can barely hunt when the prey is not moving and not visible.

The trickery has been facing around the world especially on what we are facing right now, well that is how the mind of scammers and hackers works, they will take advantage on what we are facing now because they know that there would be so many people who will be tricked because they have thoughts that people would take this one because they are now suffering.

Quote
"The good thing is that the FBI or the (Federal Bureau of Investigation) warns everyone that fraudsters and scammers are about to unleash a surge of coronavirus cryptocurrency scams."

“Fraudsters are leveraging increased fear and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic to steal your money and launder it through the complex cryptocurrency ecosystem,” the FBI said, and they’re targeting victims regardless of their age.
I think an important thing they're not telling people but should is about fake official emails. The article mentions asking for donations via email but doesn't warn that even if the email seems to be sent from an official legit domain of a famous institution (like the WHO), it can still be a scam. It's something which isn't obvious to everyone, and that's why informing people about it is so important. It's made possible by not setting DMARC, and Vox did a great video explaining how and why it's a threat, and which institutions seem to be particularly vulnerable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CrbHvbvvMw.

I won't be donating from my cryptos from now on, and if I would do donations, I would consider using my paper money instead and let it fly to the authorities instead.
This is the internet, and we don't know the people behind in front of their monitors no matter how they prove themselves at the public as surely everyone in the internet is just their digital-self

This is a careful time indeed. Even with projects that are going to run under the name of corona either as a token or what, is just a time to be vigilant. Many people are likely going to solicit for fund and sending their wallet address as a survival of covid-19 or their family. I think we need to watch out for all those kind of scam.

I was already expecting things like this to start happening , because I know for sure that there are people who will decide to use this opportunity as a means to start reaping others off their hard earned money. These thieves do not have a single human empathy in them, so they are always ready to do whatever they want just to make that money.

It is up to us to be very careful. If you're the type of person that has enough money and you're looking for ways to support others by making donations and whatsoever, it shouldn't be a difficult thing to do. There are already lots of organizations that are well known, you can make donations through them. We have the World Health Organization, Red Cross, Save a Child and UNICEF. They are well known and you can visit their social platforms to get links to their websites.

Nothing lasts forever
The covid-19 situation has given the scammers a good opportunity to scam the people.
But I think it's not new for the crypto users since scammers are finding new ways to scam people every year.
Such scams have been happening from a long time now and I think people have become more of aware of such scams.

I am sure that many people who are in the crypto community aware of that, and all of us prevent the scammers that trying to scam us. I hope that scammers can get arrested and jail for a long time, so they don't have a chance to trick the other people who are in the crypto community or not. They only make the crypto name bad in public.

Countries like USA, China, Germany and UK are very important to the space especially with the value of currency and the size of economy. Any comment from America security agents on cryptocurrency is a type of advert for the space and could increase adoption with newer investors. With the period so far, cryptocurrency and gold are still the only asset to withstand the pressure of price dump from the crisis. This will go a long way in the sentiment of the space in coming months.

They are quite late to the party, it seems. Community members have already been able to discern which is which weeks ago, and have already posted guidelines to know whether a 'donation fund' is a scam or not. As always, just stay vigilant and do searches, cross-references and just donate to official sources which can easily be found in the interwebs and such.

It's just appalling that even in times like these, nefarious beings still roam and try to deceive people out of their own hard-earned money by masking it using donations to the needy.

@dothebeats indeed the community is much wiser now, and I don’t believe anyone from the crypto community will fall for these types of scams.

These don't seem to target holders at all? I mean the examples listed all look like run-of-the-mill scams, except executed with crypto. I'm surprised they singled out crypto at all considering these scams have predated crypto itself lol.

It's interesting how no less than the FBI has come out with this warning though. Makes you wonder how prevalent crypto scamming really is.

@jseverson I’ll second that considering FBI choose to gave a warning for crypto says it all that crypto is gaining lots of recognition these days, and maybe it even believes that people are using more crypto’s than fiat.
