The process take few minutes because your bitcoin wallet has to convert btc to fiat currency and then convert fiat currency to USD. That's absolutely normal, that's why Starbucks starts accepting bitcoins right now because they fully understands how bitcoin transaction works.

in my area we do not have the facilities to use bitcoin for shopping or trading. in fact the users of bitcoin are not as more therefore the shopkeepers are not accepting bitcoin for shopping. but still i am hopeful that a time will come when we will also be able to use bitcoin for shopping in our local area. What you are telling is good for those who are earning day job and what ever they are earning in bitcoin that they can save it for future profit. But who are earning only through bitcoin they dont have spare to save it ya but they can try to save at least 10% of their earning so that in future they can get more if any emergency of expense occurs.

Patience is a virtue my friend , we should be gratefull sometimes that we are earning bitcoins for free or we can earn it with our freetime without any difficulty. We should learn to be patient buddy.
Even if you have patience, bitcoin's transaction confirmation still take time to be confirmed. As for the scenario "...get a coffee from Starbucks...", using bitcoin is impractical and it is indeed difficult to use bitcoin in a daily basis. Well if you have all the time in the world then your patience will come in handy. But let's be practical here, who would wait for an hour just to pay for a coffee which I think before you can pay for it, you already finished drinking it minutes ago (30 minutes or so). Fiat is still practical for this type of transaction.
