I don't know much about DASH's history except it was called as darkcoin and that was a Bitcoin fork. I really don't know for it evolved this far. Network is fully controlled by masternode holders now. But the price is keeping on going up maybe because of their marketing ($4 million budget per month) and Palm beach report.
Dash is showing good growth compared to many other altcoins that are highly recommended by users and market analysts. What we invest on dash gives promised growth and now lot of users could have been feeling bad of missing the chance of investing into dash at lower price.
Those are most likely users that listened to trolls like cryptohunter, without doing their own homework about Dash.

That is indeed unfortunately. I guess for those early starters into Dash it is also about having (and keeping) faith in the project and trust in its development team, despite efforts from competing crypto projects to directly undermine that
faith and trust with false accussations and spread of fud.

This is 100/124 nodes using cloud computing to instamine DRK. We are at block 2870 and block reward is 500. From block 1153-1729 block reward is 277. After that it is 500 again hence 2294 block at 500 + 576 at 277 = 1306552 DRK (worth about 966,848,480 usd ) were instamined in less than 5 hour by Edufield and coworkers using about 100 cloud mining instances. Edufield himself instamined in not even 5 h from 600K to 1169K DRK ((1306K-600K)*100/124 + 600K) depending how many of the 100 cloud mining instance were its own. All this while having purposefully set the difficult ridiculously low and block reward 100 times what it is now.

Well, Atlhough Dash has an amazing growth in 2017, I dont think that Dash is the currency of the future. Bitcoin it is.
DASH is a great cryptocurrencies and is here to stay. Definitely worth an investment! It had a great year, went up more than 50x.
