I don't think that many people actually paid attention to this, but it will help bitcoin become a little more popular in any case.

There isn't actually any hindrance to say the word bitcoin in a soap opera, or tv shows and movies, because bitcoin is decentralized, and in the first place, there is no one owning bitcoin's creation other than Satoshi where in fact, he's really anonymous till now which implies that bitcoin is a currency for everyone. That means that even if people say that world bitcoin, it doesn't imply an explicit advertisement of bitcoin as a product but a general currency to increase the awareness of people towards it.

I also watched some movies and characters are saying something about bitcoin, believe me or not, it can impact that world in bitcoin adoption if bitcoin will always be used in shows.

Just completed watching the episode.

What a rush to get that laptop. I assume many at that time had to go through the same situation. They would have mine and forgot about those mined Bitcoin.

It sure was a free advertisement about Bitcoin considering the year when this episode was aired.

It is difficult to evaluate the positive/negative effect of such an advertisement.
But I think you heard what you wanted to hear. If you have no relation to astrophysics, then you are unlikely to be interested in scientific research by Howard, for example.

I think that's actually a really good point.  If this were a forum about model trains, would we naturally assume that the average member of the public will take an interest in that every time a particular character talks about it?  Because, having watched a lot of that show, I can guarantee they've talked about model train collecting on far more occasions than they've talked about Bitcoin.  And I certainly don't feel any particular inclination to get involved with model train collecting just because they talk about it on the show.

It might be more realistic for people in this thread to take their excitement down a notch.
I don't think everyone who watched the show will become a fanatic trader etc, but for a group of those people, the word Bitcoin now sounds just a little less extravagant. It brings it just a tiny bit closer to the world they can relate to. Next time they are in a conversation and Bitcoin comes up, instead of just zoning out, they can say "oh yeah did you see that episode of BBT?". That will make them feel like they are somehow included in the group of people who know about Bitcoin.
And just maybe, if they're anything like me, they will start drunk philosophical conversations with their friends about what it all means etc and start Googling and learning. But I doubt that would be a majority Cheesy

In the episode 9 , season - 11 , The big bang theory tried to tell their viewers a little bit about Bitcoins.
In the episode the people mined some Bitcoins and unfortunately are trying to find where they did mine it.

I do think it was healthy for the Bitcoins community at that time , they did use some words that weren't that good for the community but at the end they did end it on a good note .

Using Bitcoins in day to day daily soap operas could help expand it's users .

I took it in a positive note, how about you guys , was that good or unnecessary?

Cryptocurrency and Blockchain is like a normal thing that everyone has to know now. Lots of classes are now teaching about cryptocurrency to people and there are also some videos where I have seen them reference cryptocurrency. Like in the February 2016 movie, Deadpool, a Bitcoin sticker can be seen at one side of the bar. Marvel referenced it in one of their comics, Hunt for Wolverine. If you watch the Family Guy, there was a place Lois said to Peter that they really have to figure out something for the family since their savings money is getting smaller and smaller, then Peter said Bitcoin!

So, cryptocurrency is becoming like a normal thing these days. Blockchain is also one of the most needed skills, and nobody will know about Blockchain without knowing cryptocurrency.

IMO, this is a kind of symbiosis of mutualism. Film production tries to show something that is booming, tries to get wider public attention.
On the other hand, of course, this is effective for media expansion of information, many people who didn't know about bitcoin beforehand will realize it and learn more.

But anyway, it's just a bit publicity for Bitcoin. Not something significant knowing that a lot of people have heard of Bitcoin already, but a win regardless.

The more publicity it gets the more people will think that Bitcoin is a normal thing in everyday life.

Well to be fair, Bitcoin has already been a household name for a while. I don't think this episode did a significant positive effect, but yes like I said it's a win regardless.
You're right. Bitcoin is hype by the time they release that episode. I'm an avid fan of big bang theory and I believe that episode really boost the presence of bitcoin. The way they define bitcoin on that episode is really attractive which might attract new hodlers since Big bang theory was a hit comedy show.

PS: the way stuart clear the flash drive that containing tons of BTC just to resell it for penny was very funny. Plus no one knows where the flash drive go except stuart which didn't have any idea what the fck he done.  Grin

I only see a few TV series where bitcoin is represented well, most of them end up being used by criminals in the movies.  A local series in my country which in the movie they talk about cryptocurrency to pay a hit, I was waiting if they are going to flash the silkroad or a marketplace website but they did not. Its always misrepresented on TV like it's for the criminals.

It's good to have a free advertising about bitcoin and when people heard about it for the first time I'm sure most of them will find more details about it until they become one of us here. They will surely land here if they wanted to know more legit information about bitcoin. I remember the shoes that banned in the NBA association when they announced that they banning that shoes's brand because of a certain reason, people flocks to the store and bought those shoes that make their sales skyrocket. that would become the result if some major channel gives free advertising to Bitcoin.

The episode aired Nov 30, 2017. Less than two weeks later, BTC broke the 15000 euro mark. Coincidence? I think not!  Cool

I always wondered what was the reason that the Bitcoin exploded in late 2017, but finally a reason was discovered Cheesy

I don't see why you think something in that episode wasn't healthy for Bitcoin (although I admit I didn't watch it). But a short summary says "Sheldon tries to teach the other guys a lesson after they cut him out of a potentially valuable Bitcoin investment seven years ago.", so it should be something regarding the loss of opportunity to mine Bitcoin at time when this was very easy and cheap. Maybe someone else would react similarly to find out that a friend or acquaintance didn't tell him about a good business opportunity in the past.

For all those interested, this episode is called The Bitcoin Entanglement

Family Guy did promote Bitcoin too. I had to rewatch a scene when Peter Griffin mentioned the term. Forgot which episode it was.

It is ok so far they do not use it in something that makes the general public see it as a bad thing. For instance making movies about using bitcoin to launder money or acquire illegal materials anonymously from the black market. I have also watch many movies in which I can see and hear frequent discussion about bitcoin

I haven't watched the episode but it's positive as long as it's getting exposure in the mass and mainstream media, let's consider it as a healthy exposure and publicity for bitcoin.

Any advertising for bitcoin is useful. In this case, it will actually work.
But if they describe bitcoin in a bad manner, there's a bad effect too although there's the common quote about publicity which is "good or bad publicity still a publicity".

These series are a double-edged sword, so if they are used well, they will be good at promoting for BTC, otherwise, they will give a false first impression.
I remember a lot of people give the first impression of an idea, for example, you have a lot of people who know Japan through the series and anime that we know.
Therefore, I hope that investors will support this industry to benefit cryptocurrencies and ensure that the wrong information is not provided.
There are a lot of series currently out there that you can watch during the ban period.

It's not like everyone will be buying BTC because of it, but it helps. Not only to get more people involved, but also to de-criminalize crypto in the minds of many people.

They're one of the few shows doing that, though.  It's a refreshing change of pace that Big Bang Theory used Bitcoin in a socially-appropriate context.  As opposed to quite a few other shows that have a strong tendency to mention crypto primarily in a criminal setting.
True that. It's a shame. But I try to look at it from a positive side. I bet that episode has caused a lot of google searches. Unfortunately, a lot of these people have read negative things about crypto. One must not forget that crypto currencies are in fact being used for illegal stuff.
But I think a lot of people have learned about the good things crypto has done. And every time the episode is watched on online platforms or broadcasted on TV channels around the world, more and more people will become used to hearing about BTC and other crypto in their daily lives. So in the long run, I think it's a good thing and I can only hope that more shows will involve crypto into their storylines somehow.
