Those Amazon nodes makes a DoS attack on the entire P2P network due to the way sybil resistance in Bitcoin works. The nodes will not connect to each other, because they are on the same netblock, but every one of them will make 8 connections to other nodes which people run at home on their ADSL lines and cable. Taking up much of their bandwith, which they wanted to provide as a service to real nodes and SPV clients all over the world. And I hope people stay away from mining pools which sabotage the field intended to be used by BIP9 to deploy soft forks.
There are not a lot of individuals, who would be willing or are able to pay that much money for a DDoS attack. It is actual sad to see people with loads of talent, doing this kind of harm, when they could be doing so much good.

I recently converted my node to a classic node and I have received a total of 4 alerts from my hosting provider advising me that I was getting DDOS'ed and that they are taking measures to prevent the attacks from reaching my VPS. This is while my classic node was still synching and was at roughly block 250k.

You should sync with Bitcoin Core 0.12. It is roughly 7 times faster than "classic".edit: 5 alerts and am at
block while (most likely still) syncing. I've fended many DoS attacks myself running Bitcoin Core on my nodes. DoS attacks against bitcoin nodes is fairly common, and I doubt the attackers care which version you run.
I've run a full node for over 2 years and had internet since the mid 90's. Never had a single DDOS against me in all those years until switching the node to classic. So yes they care which version you run.
I am not sure how DDoS will help in the progress of bitcoin. If Classic is really better ...

If it ever gets to this mythical point of "node centralization" then the BTC price will be like what, 5k? 10K? You are benefiting from more people using the network anyway. So don't act like you aren't getting paid.
Enabling growth of the network / on-chain transactions also opens the door for the next great bitcoin "bubble" (price increase) especially if it is being used in such great transaction volume that 8mb+ blocks are actually required.
Limiting growth of the network is just insane... I don't get it. Do you want BTC to stagnate forever?

For home user it might be probem because the internet will be down at the time of the attack. For VPS it is not big deal to be down ocasionally if you just run full node to support network.
The attack cost money + possibility of getting caught, so not worth it especialy when they can get down only about 10% of classic nodes.
Regarding the cost - I wonder who is paying for this and how much they've spent so far.
