Still down?

strange can hit deepbit from a remote location but no from home where my miners are and there all down. can hit any other website on the net and double checked dns and it going to the correct ip just cant connect with miners, webpage or ping.. comcast blocking??

Edit: Was my router, wrt54g running ddwrt firmware. think when I added another miner the router must of had a limit of how many connections per port. replaced router and back mining  Grin

i would be suprised if there is a better method. because it would mean Tycho wouldn't have done his "homework" *g

i'm below 300mh/s but pps is not better for me it's just different. it just comes down to how much luck i have. if blocks gets solved fast then proportional is better. if the blocks are invalid or take long pps is better. pps is like an insurrance. if everything is fine ur wasting money on it, if things are not fine(long/invalid blocks) it takes the financial damage instead of u.

3h work:
solved hashes: 44 reward: 0,00329794 hashvalue: 7,27045863636363E-005
as u can see prop. netted me a gain instead of pps, because all 8 blocks were solved quite fast(longest duration 38min) and so the prop. method was better. because the 50btc were shared just between "a few" solved hashes, which increases their individual value.

example block:
time to solve: 0h10m my shares: 5 all shares: 381991 my reward: 0,00063483   hashvalue: 0,000126966 very short round and the hashvalue from prop is more than 2 times higher than pps!

but the other day it looked better for pps:
~13h work:
solved hashes: 353 reward: 0,01405718 hashvalue: 3,86273784702549E-005
in this timeperiod the blocks took quite a while to solve, so the indivudual hashvalue decreased and pps would have netted me a gain instead of using prop.

example block:
time to solve: 2h15m my shares: 57 all shares: 5518786 reward: 0,00050093 hashvalue: 8,52459824561404E-006 very long round, so each hash has very little value: a sixth of what pps would have netted.

as u can see in the short run it comes down to luck: having picked prop for fast blocks and pps for long blocks.

but in the long run?
to calculate that u have to take the 50btc(per block) and divide them through the average number of proof-of-works which are needed to solve a block. the result is the average hashvalue. if it's below the pps-value then pps is better, if not prop is the way to go.
i dont know how to calculate the proof-of-work chance, so i have to take the data from the page. in the last 24h 65blocks were solved on deepbit, 58.152.689 solved hashes were needed. meaning 894.656hashes on average per block. giving the individual hash a value of 5,589*10^-5. which just confirms what i said earlier. the last 24h weren't full of long or invalid blocks, so the prop method came out on top.
if anyone knows how to calculate the probability of the proof-of-work, u can check if tycho calculated the price fair for prop vs pps. anyhow it will be quite small so and just a probability.

I had problems connecting earlier today, changing my DNS servers to level 3 communications public DNS sorted it.

I actually did some testing on this, and found that in the sub ~600 mh/s range it is better to use PPS than it is to use proportional.  If you are running around the 600 mh/s range, you are around 2% of the total hash power.  If you are finding say 150 shares out of 2,708,361 total shares, your proportion of that block is 0.00003582 btc.  Where as if you multiple .000051298 btc X 100, you'd receive .0051298 btc, or 143% more btc for the same timeframe.

That's bs, lol. I currently allocated about 3ghash/s to deepbit and it says 0.10% of total capacity.

so the pps is actually as low as 0.00005129803015564 * 0.93 = 4.7707168 × 10^-5 ?
Looks about right.  I wonder if anybody has put together a chart that shows what payout method is better for any given hash rate per average block time.  If not, I guess I could start on an XLS or something, but I just ate lunch.  Sleepy time.

I have a script that calculates potential earnings for a few pools, comparing pps to prop. Pretty much got the results phewajack got. Below 600MHz i earn more on pps, even compared to zero fee prop pools. I can post the script here later when I get home.

For my tests, I ran this on two different computers, running the same hardware (hd 5770's) over the same 24 hour periods, one with proportion, and one with pay per share.

And now as I'm typing this, I've now seen that I just hit 3 shares out of 1,405,030 total shares, and my proportion of that block was 0.00010356 btc, which is like 3x the previous example.  So, throw that out the window.  Thought I was being helpful, and then that threw me for a loop.  I'll try to add some figures up in excel and let you know what I come up with too.

Weird http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/deepbit.net says that it is up, but I still can connect, and neither can my workers.

it's up.

4 Jun 2011 00:00 Pool's fee will be restored at 00:00 UTC, 4.06.2011
30 May 2011 Pool's fee is lowered to 0%-Proportional, 7%-PPS for a few days due to the outage caused by DDoS

We pay a competitive price:
    * Pay per share: 0.00005129803015564 BTC per every sumbitted share
    * Proportional: your part of every solved block less 3% fee

so the pps is actually as low as 0.00005129803015564 * 0.93 = 4.7707168 × 10^-5 ?

you can connect to the IP fine for the website but looks like the DNS is broke as its not resolving. I am sure when Tycho gets up he will repair it...

PMI, but how long does it take for a payout type to kick in (ie. switching from PPS to Proportional, or vice versa)?  I was under the impression that you finish up the current block and then you get switched over by the next block.  But I just switched to Proportional and there's been 5 or 6 blocks go by since I switched and I haven't seen my BTC count move at all.  And the block history column is showing + 0.00000000 BTC as if I was still under PPS for those blocks.  Is there some kind of delay where you don't earn any BTC between switching between payout types?

Tycho, is there any possibility that an alternative port could be setup for unfortunately for me, my best PC is behind a firewall that blocks most communication to non-standard ports. :/

Am I the only on who's balance isn't updating hourly?
Worker shares are being incremented, block stats are updated, but my balance hasn't increased in the past two hours.... ?
Balance is not always updated in 00 minutes of each hour.
It will not be updated if you are using Proportional mode and no blocks were found during that hour.
Also one update may be skipped in some other cases.

Those delays only affect the displayed value. Your real balance is correct.

Great to know, thanks!

DDos attack --> Difficulty not raising  -> people but more hardware --> network secure...
DDoS attacks do not affect the difficulty. It's only a few minutes (rarely hours) of interruption, which is just a very small part of 2016 blocks span.

What is your hash rate?  Look at statistics; any rounds where you have zero shares submitted [and zero payout] ... assuming you are using proportional?  Slow mining with such increased difficulty might just result in no perceivable payment change in an hour.
