trolling
Being a prick on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it's the internet and, hey, you can.

Guy: "I just found the coolest ninja pencil in existence."
Other Guy: "I just found the most retarded thread in existence."
                                                                                                             -Urban Dictionary

Normally a "troll" is someone who likes to "troll" or tease you on any video game, social network, etc. Some people "troll" sometimes, but they do not intend it to hurt someone. Other people "troll" other people because they want to hurt them, this kinds of people are the scum of the internet.

From Wikipedia: In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

This sense of the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, but have been used more widely. Media attention in recent years has equated trolling with online harassment. For example, mass media has used troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."

Well done I was going to add to that about the media perception of what trolling is but you beat me to it, yes, online harassment isn't trolling, many news journalists know nothing about the internet so they don't know the different, plus they're morons so that doesn't help things much.

I don't think the natural definition of trolling can extend to every act of trolling. For instance, my Alpha Male thread, 10,000BTC Loan, and 'I have a confession to make/I'm a tree' never really disrupted anyone, and I didn't post them for attention.

It was just my sarcastic way of asking or stating my opinion. Such as, "Why do people ask for extraordinary amounts of loans, and then posts on of the stupidest lies?"

What is trolling?

  How is it defined?

Are you a troll?

Trolling is posting something just to get attention.

Trolling is posting something to disrupt the conversation.

The definition of the world trolling must have really changed a lot over the years.

Trolling back in the day meant to screw with noobs, as in. Lie to them, make them die in games or just mindfuck the shit out of them. Nowadays the word is used way out of context and by way too many teenagers.

Trolling is actually fairly sophisticated depending on who does it and I really mean that, it isn't just making fun of someone or something, it's provoking and sometimes the really good trolls can end up stirring up a shit storm.

It all depends on how easily butthurt you become. Really irks me when people call someone a troll just because they've lost an argument. It's also sometimes really hard to tell the difference between a troll and an infinite retard though.

The people they annoy and why is it so hard for people on this forum to read an English sentence? I keep finding myself reading back on my posts to make sure I haven't made a mistake and the majority of the time it's the idiot on the other end not reading it properly.

Well you seem to get annoyed quite easily and your sentence wasn't clear who you meant. So people probably have reason to question your unclear sentences, you just seem to be unaware of this.

Legit example of trolling right here.

Or maybe you're trolling. It's clear when you make statements like that that you're one of the people who misuse the word. There's a difference between a discusion with differing views.

Nahh this isn't trolling.  Why I started this thread. I don't think trolling is defined and a lot of forums are trying to ban trolling. Still not defined.

Well based on the objective/subjective definition, this comment isnt actually trolling.  It is truthful and unbiased.  The writer set himself up to be trolled because his comment was subjective and biased, based on emotion.  If ya put emotion into it, chances are you'll be setting yourself up to be trolled by default.  Which isn't actually trolling.  Cool

And why did you use bold here?

I dunno.  I'm trying to find myself. Why didn't you use bold there?

LOL!! This thread is awesome! Grin

I tried to make the definition that trolling is subjective comments while regular posting would be objective comments..

But I believe that definition is completely incorrect.

Let me try and properly troll this thread..

"You're an idiot.  Whoever posted this thread is a moron.  I would smack the stupid off this guys face if I had the chance to... Who doesn't know what a troll is?"

Well this is actually a subjective comment as opposed to an objective comment so maybe my definition is correct?

Beyond that How's that for trolling myself?
 Anyone got anything better?

Trolls awake!  Roast this thread in the most trolling fashion you can muster!  Then we can all know what trolls really are!!

Simply put a troll is someone who gets their kicks from annoying someone in any way they can.

For me trolling is usually messing with people and riling them up because it's funny, usually it's some hypersensitive moron or somebody who has a particular hatred about something and then using that to your advantage to get them annoyed.

Are you a troll then? And are you saying trolls are hypersensitive morons or the people they annoy?

There are people out there however, like mainstream media for example who wrongly label trolling as 'bullying' ( The sugar coated word for harassment ) but that's another thing entirely, that's just being a prick, real trolls usually target people who deserve it like somebody who's being a serious hypocrite or is a generally unpleasant person, though there are some who just like to cause chaos and piss off people with a bad temperament.
