My kids turn 7 tomorrow, I was 7 when the first Star Wars hit the theater and my step dad took me.  I remember I loved the shit out of it.  Looking back at that original movie, even with the changes added a couple years back, it was really not put together well.  I have no specific issues with the original, just saying that as an adult i see many things in low quality that i missed as a kid.  I still love the first three, do not get me wrong

So, i took the kids to see Awakens almost as a legacy for what i did when i was a kid.  it is really hard the past few years to get deeply into any movie.  it seems my attention is drawn away by the myriad of things i have to get done.  i was not so much disappointed in the latest as disappointed in the bad guy

picture me as a kid of 7, 10 and i think 13, waiting more than five years to see Darth Vader without the mask.  there was no internet, no sneak previews or spoilers, you could not even look up the actor in the way you can today.  it was the anticipation when i was young and the "Secrets" behind the masks, Darth Vader, Jason, Michael Myers, i went to movie after movie waiting for the mask to slip off

less than halfway into Awakens the girl says he should take his mask off and boom, casual as anything there goes the mask.  i thought it was almost funny the way it was so casual and meaningless.  i just wish my kids could have that same five year wait for something to happen.  and Kylo just was not the ominous creature that Darth Vader was, he was more like a confused three year old with his tantrums.  I suppose people are people and he has his personality, based on a fractured past, but it is a story and you can make him however you want.  hard to see a person with that off-handle personality rising through the ranks of any serious government/tyranny

BUT, best thing ever was the beginning, kylo was holding the mounted cannon laser back the entire time he was on the surface and as he leaves it continues forward, scaring the shit out of some storm troopers, classic moment

It was an average movie but I'm still kinda positive because it's Star Wars and it'll be continued.

Not the type for hardcore fans. Suited for the Disney type of viewers that live in lala land.

Storyline fast pace & modified. No substance to the characters.

Some don't even know who Jacen is. And what about Jaina or Ben?

All the producer care about is box office.

Such high hopes for the movie before debuting.....sigh

Great story line but not my cup of tea.  They went to far off the reservation from the original story in my opinion and the tech did not improve considering that Star Wars is more than 40 years old!  Just saying.  Just not my deal.

Hmmm... this was the worst among all star wars collection. Disney completely destroyed star wars. Ok, there was something that refer to other star wars movies (R2D2 and so on)
BUT- what the heck was wrong with the dark side? This faggas was completely powerless... a girl from desert could win with "well-trained" jedi (sith?) ... he had to kill his father (ouu SPOILER) to show that truelly he is kind of bad. But mainly weeper I would say.

And they really want to make a homo relation there? Really disgusting, to make Star Wars a pollitically correct movie and including in the movie some unnatural behaviours...

As a movie it was so so, but as a continuation of legendary STAR WARS ?! Definitely NOT a good beginning of next trilogy!

Bobby Fischer was right
It was much better than the last 3 star wars movies.  It was pretty good.  It had a lot of similarities to the first movie.  It started on a desert planet with the main character, it had a droid that met up with the main character, there was a bar similar to the cantina, etc.  There were also some parallels to the 2nd and 3rd movies.  I assume all those things were intentional.

I find its luck of originality disturbing Wink
C'mon, its a goddamm rip of first movie. Same plots, same characters, the same places.
The same bad guy, dress in black with voice modulator.  Roll Eyes
Big weapon (planet size) destroyed exactly the same way! They used almost identical shots,
when ships where dropping bombs...boring, predictable not funny.
Its a remake for new generations.

Hollywood doesn't take chances when it comes to big money. So they keep regurgitating the same old stories over and over with new movies and tv shows. I expected more but got the usual from the entertainment industry.

100% right.
What happened to those niche studios like Carolco (Terminator2) or Orion Pictures (Robocop)?
I refuse to believe that they went bankrupt of luck of audience! Entire generations, for this day
are crazy about those movies. Its "they" that forbidding us good entertainment Wink

I can understand why they play it safe with SW. Its business, risk is not welcome but to this
extent? Really?

Great film, as to be expected from Star Wars. However I think they tried to squeeze so much into such a short film, the trilogy format was perfect for long plot lines but it'll be a tough transition to constant sequels. I watched it in 2D but heard the 3D Imax version was done very well and subtly.

Don't get me wrong they did a fantastic job on all the settings and graphics but come on guys, did you not see how blatantly they ripped off the originals? They even used very similar or outright copies of camera shots from the original films. The reason it was good was because they went for the easy option of just re-hashing the original storyline and putting some new characters in and then there's all the plotholes in the story that were there like the female lead suddenly gaining jedi powers with absolutely no explanation whatsoever.

I liked the background of the stormtrooper because it finally gave those generic bad guys some camera time but everyone else is being too distracted by the fantastic battle sequences and sounds to care.

*Potential Spoiler Alert*

Everyone keeps complaining about Rey's abilities and I didn't find it that distracting. I don't want to give away too much for those who haven't seen it, but you have to realize she spent most of her life obsessing about the times of Luke Skywalker. She knew about the Falcon and Han Solo, she had a former rebel pilot's helmet, and doll of a rebel pilot. She probably heard about ever legend of the Force. So if she knew about the skills of the Force she would try them herself once she realized that she could use the Force.

Yes, but none of that was shown in the film, so as far as I'm concerned it's a major plothole where she magically gains force powers for no fucking reason whatsoever. If you remember in the original films they did that whole thing where Luke went training with Yoda but with Rey they completely skipped that and left it out. It's people making excuses for bad writing, like with other stories I shouldn't have to dig through some obscure canon story outside of whatever product I'm sold to find all the reasons for this, also you seem to be making it up so it's likely they haven't explained it outside of the films either.

It's like how the Avengers magically communicate without headsets because they just completely left that detail out, that can end up being really distracting for people who notice that sort of thing, even the most simplistic super hero stories though always give some sort of explanation as to why a main character gets super powers all of a sudden like with spiderman getting bit by a radioactive spider or something.

Well, first off you don't magically gain force powers. You are either born with them or you aren't. Even then, if you are born with the ability to use the force the level of that ability varies from person to person.  Secondly, the training was simply a way to hone those powers. If you aren't born with the ability to use the force all the training in the world won't do you a thing. Rey even struggled trying to use her powers. It took her a few tries to get JB-007 to set her free. Is the story perfectly written and every like detail spelled out in plain text? No, but it was still a good movie.
