it is a culture actually and this is why other people from other country will not be able to picture out the scenario when the fights began. Let me just correct one of your opinion about spiders. Spiders are not poisonous that could kill a human, their poision is just for their prey, to paralyze it, but only a human could be killed by a spider bite if he or she will have an allergic reaction to it that might lead to death.
Let's get back to your topic. I've been experienced betting on spider fight way back when I was just a teenager, it's kind a cool and exciting at the same time but I don't just bet on random spiders, I only bet on my spiders that I've catched on our night hunt, that way, I had the confident that I will win.
I don't really play such but my friends way back grade school used to engage in this kind of activity. After class, they usually go to the woods behind our school just to look for spiders to compete with those of others. For me, this game is for children. Going to mountainsides finding a good spider to fight with my friend's spider. I don't go to mountainsides at nights since it is dangerous in our place but we can go early in the morning like 5 or 6 then we can sell them or let them fight.
