Sure social media can influence the growth of bitcoin. The mainstream is informed through social media, that is why so many people now know about bitcoin. These people who are now interested, have maybe bought bitcoins and so they are part of the growth. But of course the largest grow comes from big investors.
Yes, social media can influence bitcoin growth, with the help of social media many people are getting the information and knowledge about bitcoin. They can quickly search what bitcoin is and how to gain bitcoin. Even me, I just know bitcoin with the help of social media, and now I’m starting eaning some bitcoin.

Let me say I have 2000 friends on Facebook, I post something about bitcoin...
lets say 60 percent will ignore it, 20 percent will just react on it, 15 percent will got interested and ask you about it, 5 percent will start making account.
although 5 percent join in, just look on the factor that 40% on my 2000 friends and that is around 800 individuals, who have learned about bitcoin by using facebook as social media.
