Because it's practically impossible to send 0.01$ to someones bank account if you like his post. That's why Flattr is so popular for blogs etc. (and forums where they have a Flattr plugin).

I thought it was weird at first, but then saw it as a form of tipping - but the most extreme ideal of tipping. Sparing some cotter for someone being helpful or giving good critical feedback.

Maybe it helps skim out unhelpful or non answers and comments. Then again, maybe its like throwing pennies at friends and family. Double check for quarters and dimes first.
