i think that depends which want you want to hold, maybe what you say about bitcoin right you just only get profit for growing value of $ but hold bitcoin have less risky then hold altcoin. hold altcoin have big risk but can make big profit in short time .

I think it's good that you hold some bitcoin and re-invest in other currencies the rest, I'm not a big fan of holding for a long time, but with bitcoin you'll probably make a lot of money if you hold around for a few years, because bitcoin is here to stay, and also when bitcoin goes down so do most of the alts, so it's also wise to have other investments like in the stock market.
