This must be great idea which is useful to both users and bandwidth sharers.  But how sooner they start this service is the question.

I think it'll end up being far more niche than most might expect. There's enough free wifi out there to be found. People would simply wait if they couldn't get phone signal or a free hotspot.

Exactly! And nowadays smartphone contracts are cheap. I have seen one for 1GB LTE, Flat Internet, Flat Phone and SMS for 15€. I mean who needs paid wifi anymore?

Having said that captive paid wifi in places like hotels can be outrageously expensive. You could sneak a router close to the premises and clean up.

That is very correct. The hotels mostly only have such standard contracts with ISP's and those are paid by the minute and very expensive. It's no fun using them. Having a free or cheap wifi in place is nice then.

But point one applies. It's too seldom that a free or cheap wifi is there. That's why users mostly will chose a smartphone contract. Available everywhere, even when it would cost. On the other hand, maybe the paid wifi will cost more, for the same bandwith, than the smartphone contract?

The more i think about that project the more i think it is doomed. I mean when you would be interested to use these wifis to have internet when going around. You most probably would find wifis, that use bitmesh, very hard. And as a provider, when you offer your wlan, you would probably earn nearly never, because the buyers aren't there.

It's a circle of doom. And i don't see it happening that people happily pay for that service when they could use their smartphone internet and have it everywhere.

Maybe bitmesh will go into partnership with another provider to have a chance. But still... i don't see this becoming a success.

I would be cool if someone can make a thread with an overview of all those sites and see what the rates are in terms of BTC/mb of space shared, just like there is one for signature campaigns. Those things can be great to get people started in BTC since everyone likes to earn some, and sharing some HDD space is an extremely easy way to get some going.

A new project called BitMesh is aiming to make this ideal a reality,It basically pays people in Bitcoin for sharing their internet bandwidth

i think its a good project
but our country have slow internet connect
so i cant participate in this
but i think this will help a lot in other user..

yeah, this is what i am afraid is going to happen to me too because of the low internet speed that i have in comparison to others. and also the payment should be high enough to make it profitable enough considering the cost of internet and electricity that you have to pay.

So I have my wifi on, and I'm in the bitmesh and you're walking past my house and you connect to my wifi but I automatically get some rent from your usage. I still have to have wifi that I bought from the usual ISP right?
And the BTC I get from whoever leeches my bandwidth would be set at a certain price per second?
Like, I pay 35$ a month... 15 minutes of that equals less than a penny.
If I had a busy cafe that btc people liked and spent hours in every day....
The pricing schedule will be interesting to see
Could see wifi providers spring up like Chinese mining farms

I don't really understand how it's going to work
Maybe just a connection fee though?
Or do you pay a flat rate and the BTC gets distributed accordingly?

I'm interested to see this. I often "bump" my iPod to my wife's iPhone when we are out, piggybacking her signal, but I have to be right beside her
A continuous mesh would be super useful
Didn't they manage to do a similar mesh web during the Arab spring when they tried to blackout the Internet?

I hope that this idea/product gets to be successful but I am afraid that ISP's won't allow users to sell their internet bandwidth.

This is what mining pools are, right? Sharing the capability of your computer (call it bandwith or computing power or whatever you want) for the purpose of combining forces with others and getting paid a regular rate or commission as a result.

This is definitely an interesting idea. I am the only person using my internet connection in and I live in an apartment building. I will have to look into this more. I could easily make a lot of money.

This seems like a pretty nice idea. The thing is, they're competing with FON...

I read this and it is not something I would like I could do. It turns out you need to have to be connected to their own WiFi Network:
"Every person that buys internet using Bitcoin connects to a BitMesh Wi-Fi connection close to them, which is provided by a client and functions by using the BitMesh app."
I don't think It will be available in many places. It is more like a test project which probably will never be developed at a larger scale.

I believe it doesn't mean that you need to connect to their Wi-Fi in order to earn bitcoins from them. It means that they want to establish a network of wifis around the world that can be used by other persons. Those persons pay in bitcoins and they buy "internets". Whatever that is. Roll Eyes

That means you can only earn money when someone buys and uses your wifi then. Which, for the most persons, would mean you earn never. I mean how far is your wifi reaching? And how many people in that circle would know this project and would pay?

It can actually be deployed in many places. I don't know how do they plan to distribute their product, but they can distribute it a bit like a DDWRT firmware, and/or in routers of their own.

It's not hard to catch private wifi signal on the streets. Many routers are overpowered for certain houses and there are small houses, on the level of the street. One can even catch signal from buildings on the street, or even neighbours can catch the other neighbour's signal... This is a very useful service, no doubt about that. They're just competing with people much bigger than them as I've said before.

I like the idea a lot. I have always though that we people use too many wifis (and pay for them) when we could just share and pay less.

However, there could be security issues with this too, perhaps hackers doing their thing with that bandwith...

A shared cost wifi is a nice idea. But many people wouldn't certainly use that for their everyday usage, so that issue would remain unsolved. I know I wouldn't...

Other problem it would solve is too many connection overlapping each other (on my house, if I scan nearby networks on my computer, I get at least 15 networks, overlapping is a real issue). I don't see that being solved soon either, unless 5Ghz signals become more mainstream.

And yes, security would be a huge issue... People would just hop on different networks for scamming.
