English language is powerful of course, but the most powerful one I think is Chinese. It's a language of the future.

No way will the non Chinese masses ever learn Chinese. It'll become a prime language simply because there are so many native speakers and they'll be making so much goddamn money, but most people cannot cope with another alphabet as simple as Cyrillic, let alone Chinese.

If the Chinese want to plug in to the rest of the world they'll need another language that the rest of the world speaks.

English is a pretty weird choice for a lingua franca considering how illogical it is compared to others. I'd favour Latin but it's a little too late for that.

I had a chance to learn latin and it was killing me. I know English is a bit weird, but latin is much harder to learn with this whole conjugation and declension.
In other words it's much easier to learn basic English than basic Latin. English gets hard if you want to know all the tenses and verb forms, but you don't need all that to communicate.

I don't see it as "most powerful" (what's powerful is the American army and passport). I see it rather as most useful. It is widely-spoken and it is the language of academia and pretty much the internet.

It is simply the result of various historical events - any language could have been used. Had the Aztecs colonized the world, we'd all be speaking Nahault.

English language is powerful of course, but the most powerful one I think is Chinese. It's a language of the future.

It took centuries for English to displace French so I don't think Chinese (or rather the official Mandarin) is going to be the lingua franca anytime soon.

I don't see a shift happening, will China invade and colonize the whole world? In the past people from many countries traveled to study in Europe, often France and England. but English became widely spoken in the last century due to the expansion of the US cultural industry, this influence won't just raise with GDP. There are many factors involved, like the difficult of learning, and there's no much sense making people learn other language when you already have a huge literary archive available in English, including this post. It's most likely that in some time we will have good AI powered translators to talk to anyone in any language.

The Chinese is getting into Hollywood so they may be up to something but until now, all fully Chinese films still have English subs. So yeah, English already have a massive head-start. Also, haven't considered the influence of Hollywood before. I've always assumed English rose during the time when the sun never sets on the empire.

I guess another factor is that the Chinese are not well liked, especially in some countries in Southeast Asia, so that might hamper adoption. At least in my country, they are seen with suspicion, especially those that flaunt their "Chineseness". They're practically the Jews of Asia.

English is the most powerful language because it is somewhat the easiest in terms of writing and understanding. This is also due to the fact that it is the Language spoken by the UK and the US. Considering the position of this two countries in world politics, you will agree with me that English will always be the most powerful language on earth. Even the Educated Chinese and Russians also all speak English language, or would want to learn how to speak it.

I believe English language is the most powerful language on earth.

I've lived with the same impression util I left my home.
When I was much younger, I was impressed about English. I can find anything I want on the internet with English. Most forums seem to use English primarily and so on.
Then I went out. I've visited quite a few European countries. And I was shocked. In most places they were expecting me to know .. German. And I don't say this only about Germany, or Austria, or Switzerland. Same happened in Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Italy... and of course, the French would prefer French, but English was also OK.
Now with UK getting out of EU, I expect German get even more traction.

English is a much simpler language and it's the language of IT and internet. But don't get fooled. The world is bigger than that.

At some point yes. English is one of the most used language in the world. That only english language is used to connect different race and kind of people. With that indication, it simply tells us that english is one of the most rich dialect present in our world. Without it, people might not achieve this kind of connection. That is why I consider english as one of the powerful language used.

English language is considered to be the "lingua franca" that is used widely around the world. However, it does not mean and will never mean that it is the most powerful language. It is because, there is no dominant nor recessive language. No language is above over the other language/s. It is simply because all languages are equal and are powerful in their own right. We all have different cultures and traditions. And we cannot compare each to be as powerful unlike any other. And language and culture are of the same kind. Hence, we cannot compare languages when it comes to its power because there is no such thing as the most powerful languge.

I don't think powerful is the right word to describe it.

English is the most known medium for communication, hence it's being used since a lot of people will most likely understand what others are saying through this language.

It is a global language that most countries use compared to other languages, and most people can easily understand something through this since this is being taught at most schools as a secondary language.

Most powerful - no, but most useful since it is global and mandatory in almost any school - yes. There are so many languages that have more power and that will be needed as much as English in the future - like Chinese and Russian since East is developing very fast.

That's because English is a universal language. Not every single people speak it, of course, nor are they good in it, but it is easily understood even if you're not very good at it.

Well it is all relative to your situation, english can be a very good asset if you travel a lot as a lot of people in other countries typically learn english. I think spanish could also be a very good asset to have as well there are many areas in the USA where a lot of things are written in spanish Smiley French being the 3rd most valuable language Smiley

I believe English language is the most powerful language on earth. For all the crypto project i have come across, their first language is always English. Even some Africa francophone countries are now using English to teach in their schools, I want to think all FIFA referees understand English language. What do you think makes English very influential?

English is a primitive language rather than most powerful one.
