Japan will face at Croita at tonight for round of 16. Japan's starting XI against Crotia: Gonda (GK), Tomiyasu, Yoshida, Taniguchi, Ito, Endo, Morita, Nagatomo, Doan, Maeda, Kamada. Also Crotia's starting XI against Japan: Livakovic (GK), Juranovic, Lovren, Gvardiol, Barisic, Modric, Brozovic, Kovacic, Petkovic, Kramaric, Perisic.

I would like the Japanese National team to surprise once again. Football is better with surprises. I usually support underdog teams.

It was nice hit out of the both sites. France beats Poland to reach the quarter final in the Qatar 2022 world cup. And in Qatar 2022 again, England beats Senegal (African champion) to qualify for the semifinal. Therefore, It is France and England will play the next match on the semifinal stage.

France vs England. England might win the match because of their strong defense and strikers...

Results from the round of 16 games that took place today:

France 3-1 Poland
England 3-0 Senegal

Congratulations to France and England for getting through to the quarter-finals. Both Poland and Senegal have been knocked out of the tournament. During their game, Poland could have taken the lead against France but they did not manage it even after coming close. The same for Senegal, they had opportunities to take the lead against England but miss their good chances.

The confirmed quarter-finals games are:

Netherlands vs Argentina
England vs France

Poland were able to do something against France in the first half but it turned into a one-sided match for France later on. Poland lost their motivation easily but I understand them of course. It is really difficult to win against a dominant and powerful team like France. It was really hard to stop Mbappe in this match. He was the player of the match with two goals and an assist for certain. Giroud also scored even though he wasted a huge chance before the goal. He is playing really good in Benzema's absence now.

England started to play dominantly in the first minutes already. Senegal aren't a big threat because of not having Mane especially. England should be able to take the lead in the first half already and capture the psychological advantage. Maybe this would be the first World Cup match for Kane to score as well.

England are playing their round of 16 game now. We are 12 minutes in to the game and the score is 0-0.

In the other match, Poland did have their chances but they failed to capitalise and score. At one stage they cold have been 0-2 up, eventually lost the game 3-1. France will next play the winner of the England vs Senegal match in the quarter-finals.

Both results were expected, Argentina and The Netherlands being the favorites.
I have to say that in the case of Australia, the goal keeper basically lost the match. At this level you simply cannot make those kinds of mistakes. He lost the ball to an Argentinean attacker while having full control of it. That's basic stuff that should never happen.

And the Australian team really played their best, they tried so much, and made an enormous effort to try and win against a better team, Argentina.
At the end of the day, the better skill and experience of the players from Argentina ended up weighting more, and they ended up winning the game.

It's a bit of a mixed feeling with this one because on one side you see all the effort of the entire Australian team, and yet on the other hand you see that goal from the basic mistake of the goal keeper, soul crushing really.

Anyway, Argentina and The Netherlands go through!

The results are quite expected at this point of the tournament. But I have to say that this tournament has given us some upsets, and maybe another one would have occurred if Emiliano Martinez had not saved that shot from Australia in the dying minutes.

Overall, Netherlands did not have a problem beating the USA as the Netherlands are a far stronger team than them, but I think Australia gave a hard time Argentina as their counterattacks were really strong and deadly. I think Messi and their goalkeeper Martinez played exceptionally well to give them the victory in the round of 16 against Australia. I am quite curious to know how far Argentina can go, and whether they can lift the trophy.

I agree. Many major European nations have been in crisis in recent years.
Just look at what happened to Italy and Germany at the last two World Cups. This is not accidental and it is obvious that the football map of the world is changing.
Asian teams have made incredible progress in recent years, and it's truly amazing to see what Japan did to Germany and Spain in this cup.
African national teams are also getting better and I believe that we will soon see an Asian or African team in the World Cup finals.

Spain completely outplayed Japan in all statistical indicators, and I think that if these teams were given the opportunity to play several matches, then Japan would not win even once. In any case, let's see how Japan will play in the playoffs. An Asian or African team in the final sounds doubtful, I think the domination of the European and South American teams will continue for a long time.

I think Argentina fans will start dreaming about  lifting the world cup already, they fighting for winning and are winning, and Lionel Messi has find his spark of form, he has scored three goals already in the tournament but he can't do this alone, he needs other players to stand up, Lautaro Martinez is not having a great world cup yet, he is was goal scoring chances every time he is called upon, Paulo Dybala is not  even showing he deserves to play or start, I love the fight am seeing in Alvarez football, if everyone can increase their standard then Argentina might have a chance.

We can count that it has been a good tournament for Argentina so far. Unless, of course, we count the defeat of Saudi Arabia, which the world is talking about. No one thought Argentina could be beaten in that match, but tournaments are open to surprise results. Just like Belgium and Germany were eliminated in the group stages. Everything looks good for Argentina, but they will have tougher opponents in the next round.

I would not say that these are the reasons for the disastrous results of some favorites at this world championship, such as Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Uruguay etc.
The same weather conditions, and even worse, were at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, and yet there were not as many unexpected results and surprises as now.
I don't think it's a coincidence that Italy failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cups, and Germany failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the World Cup twice in a row.
Also, has anyone noticed that we've never had more teams from Asia, Africa and North America and Australia in the knockout stages of a world cup competition?
I think that these results are not accidental or the result of weather conditions, but an indication of major changes on the football map of the world.
I didn't say for sure that these are the reasons but I tried to give a logical sense to the release of the big names. However what you say is also true, the championship is changing geographically, now many top players come from countries that up until a few decades ago could never have participated in the world championships. But it's very strange to see Japan go through as first qualifier in such a competitive group.
European football is in decline as football quality. It is not enjoyable at all and they started to be slapped by Asian and African teams. Still, they can somehow get to the top with the confidence of being a winner for years. But even as it stands, I think the probability of a European team to win the final against two South Americans, which is actually not very good, is low.
How do they manage to play such boring ball with 80 percent possession? Even that Spain makes us miss Greece. It is good that there is no Italy. Countries that do not come to mind when it comes to football, such as Japan and Canada, play football even with 30% possession more enjoyable on the ball.

I agree with you. European teams are not as strong as they used to be. Their performance has deteriorated. Every team in Europe has plenty of star players. Even then their performance is average. European teams are not playing well because the bonding between the players is not strong. I don't think this year's World Cup champions will be a European country.

Teams from Africa and Asia are playing very well. Africa's Morocco and Senegal have qualified. Also a weak team like Cameroon beat Brazil. On the other hand, from Asia, Japan and South Korea have qualified for the knockout round.

The world cup this time is a big step forward for countries in the Asian region. They fought very well especially Japan and South Korea. Apart from the geographical factors that might make it difficult for European players to adapt.

but even so, European teams are still the favorites to win, especially England and Spain. they played so solidly. can't wait for the next match, hopefully there will be another surprise that will be made by teams from Asian

These are the results from the games today:

Netherlands 3-1 USA
Argentina 2-1 Australia

Both the USA and Australia lost their games today in the round of 16 and and been knocked out of the tournament but those results were expected. Apart from occasional periods in their game the USA did not really trouble Netherlands. In the other game, Australia push Argentina all the way and nearly scored an equaliser with the last kick of the game.

In the first match, Germany underestimated the Japanese team, as it turned out, not only they did, but this mistake became fatal for them. In the match against Spain, everything was more difficult, but the draw was a fair result, well, in the last match they were good, but it was already too late. Germany was really not in the best shape, but they could reach the playoffs, if not for the selfless game of Japan, and perhaps if not for this scandalous out.
Yes the German team not only did not have the best results but apart from a flurry of attacking football in their final game, they really were not in the best shape physically or mentally.

I agree only about Belgium. After I saw the defeat of Brazil, Portugal (and before that other favorites) I was disappointed in almost all teams, so Germany was no worse and no better than other tops. I would not say that the departure of Germany was logical.
As for Belgium, everything was natural - a team with internal conflicts where some players do not talk to each other has no chance.
It seemed the German teams arrived here and showed arrogance as though they had a right not to only be there but also to stroll through to the next stage.

Round of 16 result. The USA are out of the tournament, it is the Netherlands who go through to the quarter-finals :

Netherlands 3-1 USA

The next game being played today is: Argentina vs Australia

The Netherlands really played so well which made their win score against the USA a well deserved one. In the game of football converting your every chance to your advantage is what makes the difference and put you ahead and USA failed to do that they played very poorly, even the one goal they got was just out of a mistake kick.
Going further to the game between Argentina against Australia, it's going to be a very tough one for both teams although Argentina is viewed as a better team to Australia but looking at the results from the previous games at the group stage no team should be written off. Hopefully let see if Messi and de Maria would be able to  deliver tonight and move to the next round

I guess Switzerland will have their job made easy with Portugal. Portugal is not playing well at all, so the Swiss team should have their way opened on to the quarter finals

I'm afraid that the Portuguese squad is struggling with its organization amount other issues as is the trainer relation with some of the players. It already had its toll and it clearly showed its impact on the last game with Korea. So this should be an easy peasy bet.

I think Portugal is playing good in the third match they didnt really need anything and just didnt force their strength. They were mostly saving themselfs and some players played more then the others. In first two matches Portugal really dominated and scored a lot of goals so i think in the match against swiss it will be a different story

@JollyGood honestly Germany and Belgium player’s need to ask themselves are they even worthy enough to play for their respective countries, because their performances were terrible and if possible both countries should change their entire squad for the next World Cup. Furthermore Japan is one team that’s stunned me, and if they go on to win the World Cup then I’ll truly regret not wagering on them when the odds were insanely high.
Belgium and Germany deserved on performances along to be sent home at the group stages. That Belgium golden generation was not so golden after all and as for Germany, it was inevitable because they simply were not good enough over the course of their games even though they won their final game comprehensively.

I have to say, Morocco stunned me.... This World Cup has featured some of the biggest upsets in history! ...and it totally messed with my multi bets... it's red all over for me.  Roll Eyes  Japan, topped the group with six points from their two upset games.  Undecided  Huh

So who do you think will cause some upsets in the knockout rounds, because I cannot afford to lose much more? Will the best teams in the world assert their dominance?
Morocco will probably go all out in their game against Spain with attacking football, I am expecting Morocco to win.

Spain is dangerous on the counter.  If Morocco comes out to strong it could actually hurt them.  Hoping teams like Morocco make it through though.  I want to see some new tes once we get o the quarter and semi finals.  Definitely enjoyed Morocco play so far.
