I live near Chicago and have been to the Michigan shores several times. If you attempt to view Chicago's skyline from Michigan's shores, sometimes you won't see the skyline at all and sometimes you will see it to varying degrees. The apparent height of the skyline changes with atmospheric conditions. People have taken photos of the skyline from identical locations and the apparent height of the skyline changes, hence this is a result of atmospheric refraction.

You might want to ask questions instead of making untrue claims that you know you don't know and don't understand (like the claim about refraction obscuring the skyline that you pulled out of your rear). Temperature gradients help determine the degree of refraction. Can you tell me the conditions by which refraction over a body of water would obfuscate the skyline?
