When it only costs like $12 for the adapter cable, why in the world would you use a paperclip? I ordered 2 cables just in case and it was like $18 shipped. They work great and I haven't had any issues running an 850watt and 1000watt PSU's together.

I've always used the paperclip method since I began mining and rarely ran into issues with it, except for some times when I didn't fit the clips in all the way. It's cheap and simple, adequate for most of your needs unless you want something that looks neater, which is where the ATX splitter comes in.

I use these.  Good for redundancy and I don't have to worry about kludgy paperclip solutions, although I did use that method back when I started mining.

I am tired of looking around PSU with 6x or more gpu connector. There seems to be second PSU can easily be turned on using paperclip method. Is that how most miners do it?
3 month I have been doing it using a paperclip, The lack of this way is If our PSUs efficiency not so good the 12 V cable will not produce the right Voltage. So we need to create dummy load for 5V cable to make sure the PSUs produce the right Voltage. will better your using relay tool such as add2Psu.

I am seeming to have problem with this. AFter running about 7-8 hours suddenly whole thing just turned off. Both PSU wont power on. Waited about 5 minutes and hacked PSU will now turn on as if it came out of some sort of shock. The main PSU still not powering on. I hope I did not fry something, either way it is load of extra work. I have never seen this during 4-5 months operation. I can plug in some SATA HDD to give some dummy load, but forgot it is 12v or 5v, too lazy to get up and check it while I am typing. Smiley

DId some t-shooting, it appears motherboard has been shot, h81 btc pro. It wont power up or power up momentarily then will shut off. One of the small PSU looks OK, I am ruling out bigger power supply been damaged but not tested yet. Sad

add2psu is ridiculously expensive, its just 2 connectors and a relay, any $2 non-brand version from china will do

I used to do the paperclip method but I didn't like not being able to power cycle half of the GPUs on remote reboot when I needed to, it would often create issues.  So I'm using the dual psu cables now and it's working much better.

Personally, I have used Add2PSU, EvgaPSUTester and Paper Clip method. All works, but the best for me is Add2PSU. PSU Tester uses Paper clip method as well. So you need to turn on/off manually for those.

Add2PSU also has good customer service. They have sent me wrong item at my first order. After contacting them for partial refund, they have refunded and sent me correct item free of charge.

i had 750w PSU which i did it just fine. But i had thermaltake toughpower 1200w and paperclip is not working. Yes i certainly connected #16 green to one of the ground and will not power up. Plus all cables are black so was tricky. I did 5-6 tries on 2 1200w toughpower psu only one time it powered up and then no more. I think I will get small PSU since I dont need huge one.

The paperclip method will keep the secondary PSU always on. You need to manually flip the switch on the PSU to turn it off. I prefer to use a dual ATX splitter cable. That will keep the primary PSU in sync with the secondary PSU so they turn on/off together and also connects the grounds on both PSU's together.

thanks, that is what i observed.

I using add2psu relay to combine dual PSU
750+750W. Simple and safety than paperclip.
Add2psu is cheap, only $10

Except the Add2PSU doesn't place a load on the 5V line of the secondary PSU. It's just a 12V relay that connects the +12V power on cable and ground on the secondary PSU when it senses +12V power on the sata/molex that's connected from the primary PSU connected to the motherboard. You can create your own Add2PSU from an automotive realy.

Dual conversion PSU's are the best because they convert the entire energy into a 12V single rail and then uses VRM to generate 5V and 3.3V. The cheaper PSU type converts using different taps in the transformer for each voltage and use the 5V line to regulate the voltage, instead of the 12V line like the dual conversion models. That causes voltage instability from not loading the 5V line.

the green one is number 16 Pin, you can connect the green one to any ground Pin cable, 3,15,17 etc.for more clearly you can see the picture below:

it's clear now, so I need to count until the holes number 16 (for 24 pins, it is green).
