I would assume the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro isn't too bad. I remember it was absolutely the best card that money could buy back in 2003. It might be possible to mine GPU coins with it but I'm not sure how it stacks up with newer generation cards which probably now far outclass it. Might be worth a shot though.

That thing is 11 years old then. I doubt it will be good for mining anything. Heck, does it even support running code on it? Cheesy

Probably not, it doesn't support OpenCL at all according to the wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_R300

Bitcoin can only be profitably mined with specialized ASIC equipment so forget about mining Bitcoin with that setup unless you want to buy an ASIC.

Perhaps you could try mining CPU coins too. Your processor doesn't seem too terrible but I doubt you would see a profit when other people are using far more powerful/efficient i5s and i7s to mine. Here is a list of some of them if you're interested:

"Back in 2003" LOL. Its currently 2014, every single miner should have one of those new cards, not one that is eleven year old. Furthermore, it does not support OpenCL and alt coins isn't as stable.

Sadly I would say no.  I suggest getting asic's if want to mine.

Your GPU/CPU are not going to bring much in money from mining.

A bit of a description below:

2.7 GHz Dual Core AMD Athalon 5200+ Processor (comparable to Intel Core 2 Duo) - 4 GB DDR2 Ram - 140GB Hard Drive - DVD-RW Drive (Pioneer brand) - ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card with dual VGA cable (dual display capable) - Asus Case with 2 front USB 2.0 ports - ASROCK GLAN motherboard Note: running Linux Mint, a modern, elegant, open source, and intuitive operating system

So, is this computer ok for mining coins?

Maybe one of the altcoins, but BTC or LTC is not possible with this set up.

Both OP's CPU and GPU are quite dated, and so I don't think he should mine any coins, not even CPU or GPU coins.
The hashrate he can get would be extremely low, and it simply doesn't worth the time and electricity.

This is the kind of set up you need for mining these days http://www.sikharchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/bitcoin_mining_a.jpg

Forget mining, it's not profitable anymore for normal users.
If you want to have some profit just buy bitcoins from an exchange and hold them long term.

No computer is good for mining.

You can attach ASICs to it if you are interested , but your computer will wear out before it earns you anything.

Computers are not good for mining anything except extremely new cryptocurrencies , with new PoW systems.
