This is actually the reason why other countries banned BTC due to its nature of decentralization. The government won't be able to track down illegal transactions done in the blockchain which is why other governments reject the adaptation of cryptocurrency
You are completely wrong, just read about BTCitcoin and you will learn that each and every cent spent through it is recorded and cannot be altered by anyone. So it is basically a record you create and if you are doing illegal activities you will be caught even if it takes a few years as the transaction is already there and you cannot hide from proof and it cannot be said about fiat transactions.

The reason why some countries plan on banning is because they could not understand the basics of cryptocurrency and just like you they think it is an anonymous market that cannot be tracked. Tongue

just came across this video on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSr_XZLFnS8

a father running from the authority is using bitcoin to cover his tracks while running from the authorities for kidnapping his daughter since 2019.

I decided to post it here to also spread awareness and for the people who might be in the area and might have come across this dude.

to add more information here's an article

these kinds of criminal activity would definitely put bitcoin in another bad light(not that I really care what they think) again especially when it helps the criminal cover its tracks. but it is funny when they said that bitcoin is untraceable when the technology behind bitcoin was the reason why hundreds of paedophile around the world were arrested.

for those who might be curious here's an article related to the paedophiles being arrested

Well, there's always an advantage and disadvantage on using BTC and it depends to people on how they'll use it even if its illegal.

I am not really sure with this story - if the guy is really successful is covering his crime using Bitcoin how come we are talking about him in this forum? The idea that one can get away with anything illicit with the aid of Bitcoin is already old news because in many cases the blockchain where transactions in the BTC network is happening can be trace by anyone anytime. In the past, there was this notion that drug syndicates can be using Bitcoin to make their business go undercover until they realized that they are actually exposing everything for the whole world to see. One can be covering his tracks more if FIAT MONEY is used since there is no document trail involved.

Come on, its not going to put bitcoin in a "bad light". Lets say bitcoin never existed. He would still commit the crime and run from authorities. This time instead of using bitcoins he would be using fiat currency to cover his tracks. He would be using cash money to avoid any paper/digital trail. He could use visa/master giftcards to make transactions and no one will ever know who made it.
Articles like those are just trying to spread fear among people. Nothing else.

That is a pretty bad thing but hey there is no one here that doesn't want to solve the problem that bitcoin is being used for illegal activities and such, like the dystopian book Brave New World, if something bad happens and bitcoin is involved, we just pop some Soma and let those negative things go away. I don't get why some users here just says that this is nothing, every other thing has their bad sides blah blah blah, indifference to a growing problem is not going to solve it.

It only puts it into a bad light with mindless people. Criminals can use anything. Does that make everything a criminal uses bad? If we start using "logic" like that can you see just how far and ridiculous it can go?
We may as well say cellphones are bad because criminals use them. Chat apps are dangerous and criminal organizations use them. Hell the internet itself must be bad then.
Despite how logical some people may claim to be people use their emotions to make decisions most of the time, for anyone that is willing to calm down a little bit after reading the story they will immediately realize this person is not only using bitcoin, he knows the ins and outs of technology so he is far more difficult to catch than most criminals, so it is not only bitcoin but probably many more tools are being used to try to remain under the radar, so if we used that logic not only bitcoin should be banned but a great deal of other tools as well, and as you may guess that does not make sense at all.

It doesn't put bitcoin in that status because even before, the first impression that it got in the public was it's only used for purposes like this. That's why the understanding that they have is that when you own bitcoin, you're engaged with illegal activities. So it doesn't matter anymore what the public thinks about it because bitcoin is as-is already as a currency which can be used for all different kinds of transactions that we can ever imagine.

I admire your efforts on spreading awareness about Bitcoin being used for dark matters like this, again, each of these platforms will always have 2 sides, and the platform we are in definitely has these dark matters, drug transactions, child abuse, pedophilia, etc. this is a matter that is not new anymore, esp. to those who are not new to Bitcoin anymore.

Anyways, I sure do hope the best for this case and I do hope that it is solved as much as possible, speculations or not, it's not new anymore to the community.

I am not sure how true this is, how can someone be a ghost and they might have just added the word bitcoin to get more attention, how can they know that he is using bitcoin to cover his tracks. It looks like a speculation that he might be drugging his 17 year old daughter and how come they reached that conclusion.

The news says he is on the move all the time but using a disguise but will he be changing his vehicle all the time whenever he is on the move. I do not think so he can do that and if the authorities really wanted they would have caught him already, may be the news came to light from the opposition party may be her mother providing these information to the news media.

Bitcoin being used on criminalities or illegal activities is not already a new thing for the fact that even before, there are lots of activities that involves Bitcoin usage taking advantage of its features making those haters rant about the negativity that using Bitcoin can make into society well in fact that criminalities are being done using any type of currency more precisely being said on the part of fiat and that will never be change for criminals are taking advantage on any type of currency because of their human nature being wise. It is not a faulty of Bitcoin itself but on the human part already. Now if they will keep on bumping the same issues and allegations all over again, still it lightly affect because such issues existed before but still lots of people get into Bitcoin right now. Although such thing is really a bad image of publicity on Bitcoin's part.

I think that bitcoin will definitely suffer as there are a lot of media personality there that are willing to talk shit about bitcoin and they are going to sensationalize this story as something that will hurt bitcoin.

I don't expect that will happen because even fiat is used to carry away masses wealth. Money is stolen by the government and the common finds a way to maximize the blockchain system, which is worse? When government loot from people who put out trust in them, that is bad to do. In regarding bitcoin, this kind of fund can't draw it down because people are also reasonable to know that fiat is used to for embezzlement.

I understood from the video that this is some psycho that cannot accept a custody dispute. And Bitcoin was briefly mentioned just once.

You could use anything for good or bad - knives, Bitcoin, prepaid cards, even food (poisoning).

Anyway, I hope that the FBI will catch him soon and free the girl.

The Feds are also also technically very much upgraded and have tools to track the fraudulent practices being carried over the internet. So don't portray Bitcoin as digital currency which can be used for such criminal activities because fiat is also used for such illicit crimes and we can't blame a coin instead of people who are using it for such shameful activities.Btc is the most powerful decentralised currency ever built with immense benefits and security is one of them so don't try to defame it.

Yes. I believe that it will be only at first that he can run away from the authorities because as I can recall all of the people who are runners are always ended up caught up. I also believe that this guy was an IT expert or some like expert in technology because he used Bitcoin in order to have anonymous transactions. I can only see these kind of crimes and actions in movies and I was amazed in the real life though I am so sad because people making some advantages to bitcoin. I hope people might stop using bitcoin inn their illegal act or some unwanted actions. Hoping this guy caught if he did some horrible and bad things.

Although some point out that the guy is some kind of IT expert and uses BTC, it is not at all a question of whether he can be found, it is just a question of how high his case is on the priority list, and who the people involved in the investigation are. No matter how well he hides his tracks, unless he lives somewhere outside of civilization (which is not the case), it is certain that he leaves even a small digital trail because he still can't live 100% of paying with BTC - he has to convert it to fiat to bought food and paid bills.

The fact that he uses BTC (if that’s true at all) will actually be a reason to catch him, because paying with cash is an ideal way to stay under the radar. One of the complete nonsense that people still believe in is the complete anonymity of BTC transactions, so some are very unpleasantly surprised when the police show up at their door because they were doing something illegal and thought BTC was protecting them from the law.

This sounds like a terrible story, even though he's her father and thus probably feels like he has the right to do what he feels like doing. The info about using Bitcoin to buy stuff was very brief, and there was no detailed information on how they came by this information. Overall, what matters in kidnapping, not the means used to achieve the result. So it shouldn't harm Bitcoin's reputation, as the negative elements of the story have little to do with it. I mean, he could've used cash for this, and so what, we should ban cash after that?

This guy is an IT expert, which means that even without Bitcoin, he could still secure his IPs or internet activities.

The media seems to emphasize or relate the use of Bitcoin in these illegal activities while there are a lot of abuse and things like these happening with the use of fiat. There are a lot of things they could use to trace this guy and the fact that they have photos of him means that they could find ways to catch the guy.

I mean, that also means they are ordering food and that is delivered to their place, right? If not they could just narrow those platforms using Bitcoin as a payment method. They don't need to trace the exact Bitcoin address.

Even with the use of fiat currency on such illegal things, still government cannot totally avoid it, so it is more difficult to Bitcoin as decentralized currency.
Fiat or cash is even more difficult to track honestly since you can easily spend $10k on various places without giving your ID. With how exchanges and government move right now, sooner or later they'll build their own surveillance network to monitor crypto-fiat transactions and build their own profile for each user. At that point, Monero or other privacy-focused coins might be the better choice for criminals.

Close, I'm sure everyone is aware that IRS offers $625,000 for Monero, Layer 2 tracking software. Sooner or later crypto will not be a practical for criminals to used, if they want to cover their tracks.

Well, that's how it is since long time ago. People will find a way to abuse things, just like how they'll find a way to use it for good cause.

Human nature I guess, things need to be balance, you can always find positive things about certain invention and then there's the opposite. Bitcoin is no different from those innovations.
