This actually reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons where I believe Homer was trying to start some gimmik religion about praising a famous singer. Hehe. He basically went the same exact route I'm suggesting here. Just preach about your views. If you find people that support it, that's how you start a religion.

Well, if being serious about creating your own religion, you'd better start from reading works on religious studies to understand what are the main aspects of any religion, how religion influences one's life etc. Then you may read a bit about different tribal religions. It's easier to analyze them than widespread ones. Then you formulate your main ideas and try gathering people to talk about them. Together you may write The Book of your religion. Congrats! The first thing you need to recognize is, you are your own religion. Now all you have to do is formalize it to get followers.

If you don't recognize that the things you value as sacred are important, you will not be able to convince followers.

If you feel you need a personal religion more dynamic than what you believe right now, you better change your beliefs before you start promoting.

If you make as your promoted religion something you don't believe in, people will see through you... maybe not at first, but sooner or later. Some of them will not be happy with you. Some might be downright antagonistic.
