Topic: How can you cool/vent the rigs in a garage? - page 2. (Read 745 times)

I have 49 GPU's and 7 ASIC miners in my garage.  Cooling has been tough.  I cut two 5" holes in the side of the house and put dryer vent 'shields' over the holes to make them look like ordinary household vents from the outside.  One sucks air in, the other pumps hot air out.  I use Vortex 8" ducted fans on both holes.  The Vortex fans are really loud, but at least inside the garage the sound is muffled.  Then I have an AC unit which vents its hot air also through the 5" vent exit.

This worked okay in winter but now I am putting all the rigs into a tent inside the garage.  Stacking them inside the tent.  With ducting pushing outside air into the tent, and the other vortex fan via ducting pushing the tent air outside, it should be really cool, also the AC will pump its cold air into the tent.

Setting up my garage cooling (and constantly adjusting/improving it) has taken way longer than building the rigs themselves.

Setup looks decent so far. As others have said, it shouldn't be too loud overall, at least not so much that it would be an issue with neighbours.

Could try to design it like a server farm and have a wind tunnel in the middle.

OP said he has an HOA, I doubt they would approve of anything like that sitting outside (at least in his front yard/porch).

Garage works, just have to be creative in how you vent things and create air flow.

The guy in florida, two ton hasher, does great stuff on his porch, if youve got a porch to do it i'd go with that.

I've seen his youtube videos, if we're talking about the same guy.  Rigs in wooden boxes on the enclosed porch?  You're right.  Seems like he's doing very well even in the humid weather down there.

You should not have troubles by opening the venting through the roof although im not sure if that would be enough to keep all cool, anyways, noise can be controlled with acoustic foam as well

You need intake at the garage door, I'd get these for security reason.

Then make sure that your roof has an opening for the air to release.

This has a nice thermostat feature

Then I'd get a return vent mount it to the ceiling, connect ducting in the attic so it isn't uber loud and connect it to this

There's a security screen door there you can't see (#1 to keep people out, #2 to help keep bugs out).   I kept the top part covered in Styrofoam to help keep the air coming in at the floor level but could easily remove that and bring more air in if needed.   Rain/Snow can come in through the door for now until I cover it outside more to help keep that out.  The door leads to my back yard, so not a lot of people would even notice it.   It's not something they are going to be easily getting through.   I hope no one does, I don't want to clean up blood off my equipment (bullets do that Smiley   ).  I have a security camera/alarm system running 24/7 also along with smoke detectors that link across my house (if one goes off, they all go off).

Hopefully that makes sense.

Not the optimal system but it works.  Equipment is nice and cool and fans are usually only 33% on the GPU's and < 5000 RPM on the Asic's.

So here is my fun setup.

Right now it's functional.  Summer time I'm not sure.  I may bring in a portable swamp cooler and see if that helps with cooling assuming I can keep the humidity at bay.  The gable fan has a thermostat and humidistat so I can easily pull out air if the humidity gets to high.   The room it's in right now is approximately 10x20x9 so the air circulates almost twice every minute.

I've been looking at warehouses to setup my own mining hosting operation (and I could use the space for my existing business) so I might switch it up when I find something.

Why do you need a lock on the door?  Can't you just kick out the filters and climb through?

Do you guys deal with humidity where you live? I assume it's probably not the best for rigs and was curious on how to prepare for the coming humid months. Dehumidifiers, airflow or just crank the AC 24/7?

I haven't experienced it, because this will be my first summer mining, but I live in midwestern part of the USA, and we have some humid days in July and August.  I'm very curious to see how that goes.

Same here man. But turns out rigs are essentially expensive dehumidifiers as greenfailure pointed out lol. Just gonna buy more fans to improve airflow and mine on!

I installed a garage door vent in mine, still have another that I need to install in the top, but it's already improved the temperatures a lot!

Took a little less than an hour to install.

Long-term I plan on installing some gable vents along the top sides of my garage to allow for more airflow.

typically not a problem, the heat given off the from GPUs keeps the moister in the air at bay.

moving the hot air away always better than using A/C

I rigged the shit out of it lol.  Basically it's mounted to the ceiling so it draws all the air out of the room and into the attic (which has 2 big vents outside).  I have one of those pull down stairs so you can access the atic, so i just made a cut out that the fan fits in and seals to so i didn't have to cut a hole into the ceiling.  So far it seems to be working fairly well, but again, it's winter here so i'm not so sure how summer is going to go.   I have a backdoor that I've put a security door on and then covered it with Styrofoam sheets and air filters to bring in cool air by the rigs themselves (I have 6 GPU rigs of 8 cards and 2 Antminer A3's sitting there).    My airflow could use some work because it draws it so quickly to the ceiling rather than through the rigs but that's on my to do list.

I can post a picture if you are curious.

I guess it would depend on how big of a vent fan you are using.  I'm using one that pushes 3010 cfm.. It's about 80DB right next to it, but say 10 feet away it's only like 65 db.

I'm using this one  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0116TNQJ0/ref=twister_B073ZNGR6S

This looks good thanks.

DO you have this fan placed in your ceiling towards the attic and then attic exhausts passively thru a vent?

Or do you have this installed on a wall inside the attic?

I'm going to be using something like this during the summer to suck hot air out of my mining room from the ceiling into my attic.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/QuietCool-Classic-CL-3100-Advanced-Direct-Drive-Whole-House-Fan-with-Dampers-QC-CL-3100/206047343?MERCH=REC-_-rv_gm_pip_rr-_-206000297-_-206047343-_-N

You're going to want some sort of opening for a fan or multiple fans to bring air into the garage.  Since you don't already have a window there, I'm guessing you'll want to just go as low as you can go.

I have two of these (one for each window) that I'll be pulling air in with.  Not sure if I'm really going to need to use both, but we'll see.

1500 cfm each , they use around 260 watts each

noemaly i only ever have 4 on but with comininf spring
ive had to turn all six on which is not ideal.  Next few weeks
ill add ain intake fan 2500 cfm , to bring in outside air , that way the
total air in the garage gets exchanged faster ,

it should reall help impove tempa even further

How long have you been running your farm?  Just the Winter?

Merit me or don't.
Get some ventilation in top and bottom of your garage.
Even if it is a couple of small openings on each face of the garage will dramatically improve airflow.

If you want to vent out through the roof, make sure that there's an opening (air intake) at the lower level of your garage.
GPUs aren't noisy at all (except from Low Quality Heatsink Fans of substandard/old GPUs)

You need a proper airflow:
  • Hot Air (Light) - Venting out to the top area
  • Cool Air (Heavy) - Intake from the lower area, not necessarily need fans
  • Mining Rigs - as low as possible

You don't have to click "Share" images on IMGUR in order to link them here.
I did that once and I got much, much weirder comments from the users.
