While doing a search round the forum I came across an interesting thread that lead me to a more interesting thread, I noticed that a thread was made by a user with no link attached to it, and the name of the User was Anonymous https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.208900 if I want to make that type of post how do I go about it? Is there a settings in my profile?

On special occasions and you need to request Theymos about it, but I doubt that he will grant it right away.

Maybe if you have a good reasons to remain anonymous, but if you just wanted to be your username and just go around the forum, then you won't get it. One question though, what will be the reason behind asking such kind of username?

Short answer you can't. Just create a new account with throwaway email and then create that post, no one will know if it was you.
Hahaha… This is quite straightforward, but it's true.  I can imagine the number of newly registered accounts that will make just a few posts before going inactive if everyone keeps creating new accounts in this manner. Is that the reason certain newbie accounts occasionally post about seemingly strange topics? The only option to remain anonymous is to create a new account and post whatever you like; no one will ever be able to identify you. There are no longer any settings that allow for anonymous posting.

Creating a new account in order to make a post that is either controversial or that you wouldn't want to get you into trouble is even encouraged by theymos himself.
Unlike what some people says that it is an act of cowardice, I believe it has more to do with privacy instead.

It is important anyone that wants to post information that they don't want to be linked to their main account, especially this time around that the reputation board is full of drama and people fighting against others.

Before now people request theymos to change their particular post to Anonymous and he did for them, but I don't know if it still exist till date.

And I would love to know who the user is without actually going to read all the comments made in that thread. Seems more like a forum moderator who got access to anonymous account rather than a general user? Also, can be someone from Government who wanted to provide data to a group of people on this forum? Not sure.

It's pretty cool that anonymous accounts existed in the past. Maybe there is a way to do without asking for admin's permission.
The user is pretty obvious, if I mention the user then there's no point for theymos to replace the previous user with Anonymous account.

Nah, there's no way for doing it without admin's permission except you're exploiting the site even though there's no guarantee you could do that.

You can on special request, of course, if the request is accepted.
A few years ago Theymos allowed for that just on the OP:

Although it's pretty obvious from the replies who the user is!

Damn, I haven't seen this thread anytime while being on this forum from years. And I would love to know who the user is without actually going to read all the comments made in that thread. what's wrong with your Turn it off account? it seems anonymous enough to me, i don't know you nor see your email either so that's enough being anon in this forum.
But of course, everyone is anonymous here if we all go by that explanation of yours. However, the type of anonymous OP talked about there is a more secretive type. If you checked very well you would've realised how user anonymous doesn't have any link to their profile. To state it, I believe that "anonymous" account isn't just an ordinary account. I suspect it's an admin account. That account even posted recently, about a year ago. So, we can't say it's a throwaway account.

If am correct it only happened with one or two users on request from the forum admin to grant them such opportunity, i didn't know what later transpired maybe the user eventually revealed to the forum he was the one behind the post or not, but just as Upgrade00 mentioned, such request is no longer granted and i believe it would have been due to the possible abuse other members may likely give to it, there's nothing special when you want to make a post but don't want to be identified with the OP title to that post, many people will be interested in doing same.

OP, looking at that time when that post was made and now there is a big gap and time difference and if you will agree with me there is likely a change in features and functions as well. Maybe back then there was such a policy and as such maybe for only high ranked members with reputation might likely given such privilege but however I think it can be done but only on request and approval by the forum administrator Theymos.

as the members have said, it is not possible anymore but if you are adamant about wanting to have an "anonymous" account, the best you can do to have an "anonymous" account is to follow what Upgrade00 suggested. you should also use a dummy email address when creating your alt account.

Only theymos can make the OP become anonymous when that person requested to make it anonymous but the chances of the request being accepted are not high. It's up to theymos if he will accept the request or not. Your account is already anonymous and we don't even know your personal information so, why not just post as it is. We would still know who the OP is if it didn't changed to anonymous right away before someone will reply or mentioned OP but I don't think that will happen at all.

as long as your post doesn't really violate rules in the forum, there is nothing wrong with it. we have seen the worse post in the forum, it can't be that bad. you can talk just about anything as long as you don't post a picture of your weenie.

As been said, only Theymos can grant you that request but you’d have to give him a very good reason to do so. I remember when a certain member asked for some of his topics to be made anonymous as OP, Theymos granted his request but those who participated in the thread or was in the forum back then know who the OP is. If you’re worried about offending anyone with your posts, you should create an alt account to make such posts.

This is only possible if you request it from the forum administrator Theymos; if your request is granted, you will be able to post anonymously with no one knowing who the OP is; however, I am not sure if Theymos will grant such a request anymore, because there is nothing special in it.

However, if you truly want to make such an anonymous post, you can create another account because you don't want anyone to know your identity, then make your post, and possibly forget about the account because you have passed the information you actually want to convey to the forum.

It is currently impossible to get "Anonymous" instead of your current nickname, as you have already been told. But in general, what are you worried about? If there is no connection between the current account and your real identity, then essentially your forum profile is anonymous (because no one knows who is behind that account). If you want to make sure, then create a new account (by the way, this is not prohibited on the forum) from which you can ask a question that interests you. Just don't abuse it in malicious ways.

Firstly is a good thing we don't have such features anymore because I think it would give users the window to make spam post and even worse make post that can lead to a user getting scammed.

But the forum already protects your privacy, you are using a name you assigned for yourself when registering, no one automatically knows your identity except you want them to I think That's good anonymity, the only reason you would not want people to know it's your account when you make a post has a high chance of the intention being a negative one.

Yeap, that's why I slightly edited my fist reply. Such requests are almost never accepted these days that I don't think users still make them. The most one can have now is a display name change, with a pretty good reason for it.

I think there's a setting that is possible or a adds that can do this, but it's not good for a forum to have an anonymous poster, especially here in Bitcointalk that is reputation based because not everything here is moderated, every member here is responsible on all his action and posts, only the admin can grant this request on special purposes just like what Stompix stated, and the request should have a valid reason why you want to post anonymously.

It's not something you can do yourself, making the Op of a thread anonymous is something that can be done by the admin alone.

If you have any post that you feel you don't want to associate with your account again you can write to the moderator and if you're lucky enough you could get them to dissociate your account from the thread by making it anonymous. I saw a thread that was made in 2022 or 2021 and it was anonymous but the chance of you getting your post turned into anonymous is less than 4%.

In the past, it was possible to have theymos change your account to anonymous and no one will be able to access it, that's what shows up on the thread you saw.
Those users could make actual posts just like regular users but then got their accounts deleted.

It's no longer possible to do that (theymos apparently doesn't grant such requests anymore), so you cannot make such posts.
The best way you can post anonymously now is to create an alt account with no connection to your main account and make the post there.
