Lets say I want to buy bitcoins today and store them for 20 years to use a my retirement fund.  Live comfortably, but don't need to buy a yacht or anything.  How many do you think I would need to buy?

A lot of coins needed to retire for 20 years. Like really a lot of it.

Just 10 bitcoins are enough for your retirement if you are going to retire only after 20 years.
Even only one bitcoin is more than enough after 20 years. But by considering 2036 commodity prices, you may need 10 Bitcoins to lead your rest of life happier.

10 Bitcoins simply aren't enough. By the time the prices reaches new ATH's it may last you a year.

It depends on which country one is staying and also depends on people life style. In my country 10 bitcoins is not even sufficient for couple months based on current price. I really do not know about after 20 years what will happen to bitcoins whether it will be still there or some other better things will come.

There is no comparison between bitcoin and some other similar product. According to the specialist of the field bitcoin is perfect. It will be not any new thing which can replace it in such less time. Because that itself is the first product of one technology (peer to peer) which only now it is in the first steps of its life and is an technology which is disruptive; in other words will change radically all the connected technologies (who are to many). Bitcoin is the first materialization of this technology and will be protected by the last one at least because of this fact.

Just some coins not a lot but just enough maybe 10 it is enough to survive for twenty years.

Different people say different things.
My predictions on bitcoin price:
After 20 years, one bitcoin worth will be one million dollars. But one million dollars in 2036 would buy what 100k dollars buy in 2016. So, if you need one million of current buying worth in your retirement then you may need 10 bitcoins.
My calculations are based one 1BTC = 1 Million in 2036. May be 1BTC would worth 10 million at that also. But we can expect surely 1 Million or around to it by 2036 or 2040.

So in other words, you think 1 bitcoin will be worth $100,000. We get how inflation works.

not sure with your coment is reasonable, dollar is very strong,
i can't imagine if i hold 100BTC now,

The Bitcoin price will never higher than $500 #IMO

The bitcoin price has the potential to be much and much higher than this price. I'm almost sure that its price will have at least four digits. The question is not "if" but the question is "when". Bitcoin will never die. It is the first product of peer to peer, the specialists told that is perfect and superior compared to other similar technologies. And, for more, it will be protected by the technology which has produced it.

10 to 20 BTC been good  to be a long-term investment 20 years

10BTC is around ~2400 USD which normally in U.S you can earn within a month (maybe more or maybe less)
But if you think to retier with just a couple of thousands of dollars then i think that you are completely wrong.
I think maybe 10kBTC would be enough to retire but that cost a fortune (millions of dollars)

So you think that price of 1 BTC will be $240 in 20 years? Interesting!

it will be four digits price for sure maybe even five digits but this is hardly achievable on my estimations

Yes, I think so too. But the user above has implied that the price will be pretty much unchanged in 20 years. When you consider the inflation in the 20 next year's, this means that price will actually be 50% lower than today, if 1 BTC stays at the $240 level.

This is hard imaginable to me.

The US inflation has been very low lately. I think 0.2%~ per year in the last few years. Overall the US economy is fairly strong at the moment. But that can't last forever and even in the best case scenario, if the price stays at 240$~ it will mean a loss in buying power overall.

So you'd be better off putting your investment in a 5% annual bank account or many other things than hold Bitcoin under these conditions.

I guess you may need all the bitcoins that you can have.  In this way, you have only yourself to blame if it is not enough.

It all depends on how much you can afford now.
You can invest thousands of dollars in bitcoin at the moment.
The price should be increased and people will use bitcoin more and more often.

A lot probably because twenty years is very long and it our economy is very unstable prices of the goods we need is very unpredictable so better gather a lot of coins to retire for twenty years.

To retire in 20 years and travel around the world well needs so much coins and it depends on the coin's value in that time.

I think no one actually knows.  It is really hard to guess the future, as a matter of fact Bitcoins in 20 years might be completely worthless, you just never know!  Of course they could be worth thousands, I highly doubt they hit a million per coin ever, but you never know.

The amount of USD in circulation is around $5 trillion and M1 is around $25 trillion.

So assuming the market cap of Bitcoin becomes $5trillion, 1 bitcoin will be worth $250,000. Therfore to have a retirement of $1,000,000 you will need 4 bitcoins.

But assuming the best case scenario and bitcoin attains a market cap of M1, 1 bitcoin would be worth $1,250,000. In which case you would need .8 bitcoins to have a retirement of $1,000,000.

Bottom line:
Between .8 and 4 bitcoins IF bitcoin becomes the dominant form of transaction around the world in 20 years.

Wow you really have done the math right?!
So in your opinion Bitcoin's price will be stagnant for the next 20 years?! If that is your prediction then buying 10k BTC makes no sense neither if price(value) won't rise.

If the price don't rise, it would mean the price actually went down, because if it stays at 240 USD for 20 years, 240USD then will be worth less than now because of inflation. If BTC stays at 240$ forever, i'd be more inclined to think it would die as supply go down and price does not go up.
