You don't have to register an account to lurk, and he didn't say anything about when he joined the forum.  I lurked for a couple of weeks before deciding to join, I imagine I'm not alone.
Sure many people do so and me too but there are some points
1) If you have not yet registered one account and visit the forum as a guest, you can not see trust point and trust feedback. It is only visible for logged-in accounts.
2) It is not normal when a newbie pay attention on merit and trust at the beginning. They should care about: (1) bitcoin when they join the bitcoin forum or (2) bounties (LOL) when they was invited by friends to join and earn money.
3) Visit as a guest and join here as a member are different.

I did neither imply nor conclude so but you can be right.

I don't know how you saw and noticed them. You registered this account yesterday only.

How can I know about all of these?
Jawhead gave you link to the guide is written by LoyceV. You should read it if you want to understand the DT system. After which, you can read the topic Trust flags that is the latest update on the Trust system.

Are DT members have extra power or something?
They are unofficial police staffs on the forum. As DdmrDdmr explained, the trust feedback from DT1 or DT2 members will be displayed by the default DT view (that most of members use as they don't customize their Trust list).

Their trust feedback can be seen and it can be an unofficial power (if you would prefer to worry about their power). In my opinion, the power is not make much sense if you are good member. Only scammers are care more about Trust feedback from DT members. Their scam activities are seriously affected by those feedbacks.

How to be a DT member?
Build up your account, with real contributions and wait for time, luck and recognition from the community -- it takes months or years. Forget about building up your fake trust networks.

You can leave positive, negative or neutral feedback on any profile, regardless of whether one is on DT or not, buy how that will be viewed by others will depend on their trust settings. By default, everybody uses the Default Trust view (with 2 depth levels: DT1 and DT2). That means that the Trust scores (numbers) you’ll see will be derive from the positive, neutral and negative feedback provided by people on the DT network. Trust ratings delivered by other people will not be immediate to see, but can be review under "untrusted feedback".

You can change your Trust list depth view to include further levels (i.e. DT1, DT2 and DT3), although normally people won’t do that (too broad). You may consider creating your own Customized Trust list, which means that the trust scores you’ll see, and the feedback position (trusted/untrusted) will depend on whether a given feedback is provided by someone on your Custom Trust list or not. Bear in mind that the Trust scores you see with a Custom Trust list may vary noticeably from the default DT view (you can add ";DT" to a profile’s URL or Trust page to see the scores under a DT prism).

Since the default view is the DT view (depth 2), and the vast majority of the forum used that view, the trust ratings given by DT1 and DT2 are more visible than any others are. That’s why people will be more prone to being afraid of receiving negative trust from people on DT1 and DT2, specially if they participate in campaigns or trade here.

Another debate is what negative Trust can and should be given for (the North Star should be commerce related). Retaliation and being over-zealous is not an uncommon practice, but this will take a while longer to dissect if need be.

Trust setting is a list of people who trust or distrust you and which user you trust or distrust. You can set your own trust list on your trust setting, add his/their name in your setting if you trust him and add ~ with his/their name if you don't trust him. Full guide here https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/loycevs-beginners-guide-to-correct-use-of-the-trust-system-5191802

DT only has a power to shown his feedback as trusted feedback, so you will see +1 (positive) 1 (neutral) and -1 (negative). If you not a DT1 or DT2 member your feedback will be show in untrusted feedback.

To become DT1 member you need many requirement, you can read here https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/defaulttrust-changes-5095156
But even you have been fulfill all the requirement, you'll not automatically become DT1 because it choosen randomly.

To become DT2 you need at least 1 DT1 member put your name in their trust list.
