For bitcoin there is Bitcoin Core which downloads the whole blockchain a few hundred gigabytes then you can use the wallet.

For Ethereum, there used to be a wallet. I have done a backup of the key stores but now I am trying to download that classic wallet but I can't find a download link.

The only nearest thing I found was MyEtherWallet (MEW) but then there is no Download button anywhere on their website, and even whien i try the software version it says Not recommended:
https://www.myetherwallet.com/access-my-wallet

Any help how to get access to a wallet using the backup keystores from the "old"/"classic" wallet?
There are many wallets available that you can import your ethereum private keys into like Exodus, coinomi, trust wallet etc or metamask and Myether wallet

Personally I like to use Exodus ETH wallet (desktop/mobile) for small amounts. They also have Dapps now like Compound Finance

But for more security, hardware wallet with MyEtherWallet/MyCrypto

The reason why the Ethereun MEW dont recommended or provided the link to keystores is because of ig vulnerability and most ETH mew user have lost their holding through it.
If your situation was about creating a keystroke will advise you to follow this link but if you're trying to log into your old ETH wallet, you can find your wallet private keys inside the keystroke files import it through Metamask.

Using myetherwallet why have to download file, you can access with private key only and you need put your private key data to log in on your account, I think its easy way how to access to myetherwallet and sell your fund, you can sell easily and not have to worry with file have to download.

I haven't use wallet client for bitcoin since 3 years ago. Electrum works just fine and less hassle and the same could be said for Ethereum wallet. Today, metalmask is getting more and more popular so maybe its time to switch to metalmask, just my advice. It has everything you need for an Ethereum wallet to funtion but ease to use. The difference between lightweight wallet client like Electrum and add-on browser wallet like metalmask in terms of security is the same. If you expose your private key/seed, you're fuked on both.

Hi,

To answer your questions:

Q1: Why not use a browser extension?
A1: Never ever no matter what I will absoultely not use such a thing. The layers of prgramming for a browser extension are so high they expose a mountain of vulnerabilities. Only full node or nothing.

Q2: Why desktop app?
A2: Because I want to get ready for a full node with 32 ETH staking, if and when this happens; and what I need to do: i don't know (yet).

Q3: Why MyCrypto desktop app and not any other?
A3: Because i couldn't find any other, and the only other one I found was MEW and they were reluctant to use the keystores approach.

Q4: Am I sure to have downloaded the right app not a phishing site?
A4: Yes i used my own method to cross-check the site, but the MyCrpto app itself has a way to confirm the key signature. It did not use that method because it is confusing as hell and required me to download even more software that could itself have its own problems. So at the moment I am relying only on the authenticity of the site.

So the only problem at the moment is:
Mist used to behave well, I open and close the app it remembers my wallet.
With MyCrypto: i have to Load the wallet each time I open the app, it does not keep the wallet open.

If you try it on MEW and it's not compactible, maybe you didn't enter it correctly. The wallet you can download the package from it's website is Metamask.io and this has many benefit I consider more beneficial than MEW. I use this to interact with DEX without importing or thing and he Dex never get to see my recovering phrase, Keyfile, Pk and whatever is needed for import.

Myetherwalley has already an app available for download in playstore, or if  you don't to use it, there are plenty of good wallet apps to chose from, like lmtoken were you just import your privates keys in order fro you to have an access to your account once again. But I prefer Trustwallet App, same thing with Imtoken import private keys, the only thing that trust wallet stands out to me is that it supports multi-coin.

I'm confused, why would you prefer to run the full ethereum Node when there are many wallets that can sync with ethereum blockchain without downloading the huge blockchain files?

Maybe because he wants a safer wallet to protect his investments against the hack. Online browsing wallets, such as the ERC20 MEW or Metamask, are very vulnerable, so you can't keep your long-term investments there.
However, instead of occupying the entire hard drive with a desktop wallet, it would be recommended to have a hardware wallet and you have solved the problem.

Be careful of downloading on the internet because probably you may download a phishing site that may lead you from hacking incidents. It is better to use the website upon accessing your ERC20 wallet or ETH wallet. All chrome extension last month suffered from different hacking but this Meta mask wasn't. I didn't hear any major hacks towards them.

Make sure you use the official website and here are some tutorials and guides.

MyCrypto desktop app is not "remembering" my wall.

1. I click on the MytCrypto shortcut on the desktop
2. I get a screen "How would you like to access your wallet?"
3. I select Keystore File
4. I click Select Wallet and I choose the keystore file I have backed up from the old Mist
5. I enter the password and I see my Account address and balance.

I exit the app.

I start it again, same thing I have to load the wallet every time. In the old Mist it rememebred the wallet, am I doing anything wrong?

Any help how to get access to a wallet using the backup keystores from the "old"/"classic" wallet?
Do you mean the vintage one? I also use vintage MEW. But now, Vintage MEW has migrated to MEW (new MEW) since 20 October 2019
First, do you still have the private key? Or only saving the Keystore?

From what I have read on the https://kb.myetherwallet.com/en/migration/importing-vintagemew-to-mew/
Quote
Here you are able to access the same wallet you used on the Vintage version of our site, through the same method.
There you can also find the completed information about Vintage MEW migration to the new one.

Go to "https://www.myetherwallet.com/access-my-wallet"
here, you need to find this menu and there are some options to choose to access your wallet.

To use the keystores, it is said "Not Recommended" because:

Quote
NOT RECOMMENDED

This is not a recommended way to access your wallet. Due to the sensitivity of the information involved, these options should only be used in offline settings by experienced users.

However, as I remind is that in the vintage MEW, it is also not recommended to use PK, Keywstores, or other software in accessing the MEW. They more suggest us to use the "Offline wallet" or other three options above.

Not recommended doesn't mean that you cannot access the wallet. You can still access it, but it is on your risk because it may be risky of hack or other. But so far, I personally use this way to access my MEW, access by software (mostly using Private Key or "Keystore+password")

The way to access even your vintage wallet is by importing your Keystore and then continued by entering your "Password". After accessing your wallet, I will suggest you import the "Private Key". For, this can be easily used to access your ERC20 wallet from other platforms such as Metamask and others. Here, save your PK securely.

But, if you want to access your wallet more securely, you can use the other ways as I attached above, it can be using MEWconnect Protocol, Access by Hardware, and Access via MetaMask. I think that Access via MetaMask is the easiest way so far I do, of course I have the private key to access on Metamask easier.

Actually, there is also a MEW application on Google Store and App Store so that you can also use this.

I'm using Ledger for storing my Ethereums so if I understood it correctly, you want a wallet that downloads the whole Ethereum blockchain.

Look into this.

I have been using myetherwallet for 2 and a half years now but to tell you honestly, I don't know how to access it without my private key, as I see other options to access it and wait, I have been trying to send tokens or ETH to other wallets using the site but I guess it is not working now. Currently, I am using metamask and it is easy to use too. Does anyone got the same problem? or it is only working using app? as far as I know there is an app for MEW
