I couldn't find the details about how to earn merit as a newbie, and how to earn sMerit, I think this information is not here in this forum. I understand making useful posts will earn merit but what it means?

There are many posts and useful links above which can guide you on how to get merits for the posts. But if you are a good poster and want to keep it simple, do not think of the merits. They will come to you automatically if people like what you are posting.

Why not read those stories, then learn from them?
Inspirational stories from self-made promoted users
To earn merits, people have to do same things no matter which rank they temporarily stay at (Newbie or whatsoever):
- Control their fingers and only type their posts if they have good ideas to discuss; avoid unnecessary posts I meant.
- Search for many available answers before posting and asking.
- Spend time to read, learn and increase their knowledge and experience in the forum and in crypto; just to be more knowledgeable that will do help increasing their post quality.
- Save good posts or threads for later reference, just save them as good sources for their own libraries.
- Being kindful and helpful in the forum (with good quality posts, of course).

You should know that I started in the forum as same as you, zero merit and from the newbie rank with merit system. You can do it!

I wrote some words in the past, too.
(1) Never begging for merits
Reasons:
- Doing this will highly result in Red Trust, it is just the matter of time. Sooner or later, if you keep begging for merits, you will get Red Trust, certainly.
- Doing this don't help you to improve yourself. In long-term journey in the forum, it's not good for you, generally.

(2) Spending most of your time to read and learn
Only start composing your posts when you have something extremely constructive to discussions, topics.
Reasons:
- You are noobs, newbies (lack of knowledge, and experience), so what you think are constructive most likely unconstructive in reality.
- When you actually have reasons to start composing your posts, after finishing it, please re-read again and again to check that your posts are good in grammar, vocabularies, and good enough to express most of your ideas. I wrote most of your ideas because sometimes it is difficult for non-native English speakers to write down and completely express ideas by words. It's a challenge for non-native English speakers, who don't have English as their mother tongue.

< ... >

(4) Never mind of bounties, campaigns when you are noobs
Reasons:
- Campaigns are there, open then close, then others open and close, from time to time. You should never worry that you miss this chance, that chance, this campaign, that campaign, something like this.
It is the same as merits. Lots of users complain that merits are rare, I can not get merits due to it is rare. Nope, merits (more exactly, sMerits - sendable merits) are available, everywhere in the forum. There are so many merit sources, normal users, who have lots of sMerits readily to send out. They kept them partially due to quality posts are rare, not sMerits.
- Instead of paying too much attention, and time on hunting for bounties, especially bounties that have easy rules and joinable for low rank users; you should start learning, reading, and build up your accounts.
When you hit your finish lines, it's time for you to seriously think of joining bounties.

(5) Learn from inspirational stories. Learn from merited users, topics, posts
Reading and learning from most merited users, and most merited topics, posts are one of the best way to improve your post quality, coherence and cohesion when you compose your posts, topics.
I have a topic on: Inspirational stories from self-made promoted users

(6) Spend your time to improve your English, especially Reading and Writing skills
Reasons:
- If you can not read posts or topic in English well, can not get ideas of posts' / topics' authors, it means that you have nothing to do in the forum.
Remember that you have to get their ideas well enough to not misunderstand their core ideas.
- Next, after reading good enough to catch authors' ideas, it is time for you to express your own ideas in case you have something to ask for help, something to discuss, or something meaningful to help others. This is the time you need to have good enough Writing skill.
This is why I mentioned you should improve your English skills, step by step, from Reading to Writing. Of course, you can improve both skills simultaneously.
The forum is the place almost solely for discussions via Reading and Writing.
You can find available sources for English learning in the References at the end of this OP.

(7) Don't pay your attention on post-length  (Ideas that I took from theymos' Writing a welcome message)
If you make ten thousand posts in a week, your activity will be capped and you will still be a Newbie. If you make ten thousand useless posts over any period of time, you will gain zero merit and you will still be a Newbie. You can rank up only by making good posts consistently. It's quality over quantity.

When trying to write quality posts, a lot of people act as though they're writing a book report for school: putting facts that we already know into their own words. Nobody wants to read that, and you will not get merit for it. Moreover, the length of your post and the quality of your English are only minor factors. In trying to write a quality post worthy of merit, you should offer new ideas, personal experiences, or perspectives that other forum users will actually find new and interesting.

Just research and read some more update and information that can help for us. For example, a trivia, news, tricks, tips, etc. It was hard to get merit for now because of some unuseful thread appeared always so think also a title that are attractive to read.

^If you got helpful post history but you feels that you are getting unnoticed even after your good effort then you can try merit giveaway threads, most of them were available in this thread  UPDATED - 27 October, 2019 : List of Active Merit Giveaways threads.
Joining merit giveaways is not 100% sure that you'll surely earn a merit or more merit if a forum user doesn't have any constructive posts. I believe that merit giveaways are formed because of a post that deserves a merit but didn't get one. The op did participate in giveaways but did not provide link of constructive or helpful post.
I mentioned that to OP by saying 'IF',or he will stuck with the no merit status forever.Yes merit giveaways doesn't give any assurance of getting merits because the posts needs to meet the criteria of merit giveway thread and its more difficult than getting merit from individual. Cheesy

I think the most important thing is that you have to be yourself and do nothing by force. Post in threads where you feel good and know what you are writing about.

This is the best advice here.

You can instantly tell when someone doesn't give a shit about what they're writing, doesn't understand or has inserted themselves into a thread without digesting what it's actually about. You discard the first sentence as quickly as you read it and move on to the next post. It's immediately obvious here's no substance there at all.

And I'd be just as willing to merit a good question as a good answer. No one has to pretend to be some sort of authority on a subject to have an opinion on it and that's another faux pas that comes up all the time.

Thanks for all the information and advice in this thread, everything was noted

I couldn't find the details about how to earn merit as a newbie...I understand making useful posts will earn merit but what it means?

I think OP that if you have read all these answers above then you know already that all members on this forum have different rules for granting merits.

This may be a good thread about BTC or some technical issues in wallets, a translation of another very good topic or a short answer that will help someone.
Sometimes even good humor is enough to earn merit or a gig posted in the right place at the right time  Wink.

One is certain, members have to consider your posts as valuable to reward it with merits, so you have to publish interesting content that other users of this forum would like.

I think the most important thing is that you have to be yourself and do nothing by force. Post in threads where you feel good and know what you are writing about.
Just be yourself, kind, helpful, funny and this should be enough to get you a couple of merits, but remember, don't chase merit and don't try to do whatever you can to get them, because it will only have the opposite effect and will burn you out very fast.

I hope, I helped a little in understanding the merit thing  Wink.

Well, I guess you havent searched enough I guess? A lot of  posts here can be related to earning merit, there are even guides that couls be found. There's something called a search bar at the upper right corner of the site, try entering the keyword "merit" or "how to earn merits" and some threads about it should show up. You could also pretty much look at how others gain merit and understand what made it seem like they did for them to earn that merit. It's rather easy to understand, but pretty difficult to perform.

<…> I understand making useful posts will earn merit but what it means?
A useful post is not the only candidate type post: humour, wit, opinion, even art these days can receive merit, whilst not being posts related strictly to aiding someone, explaining technical features, creating guides and so forth.

The easiest way is to simply look around and see what type of posts have been merited, and create your own idea of what those posts brought to the table. Obviously, there are cases that differ from the norm, but getting a clear picture is not too difficult. Thought and time do accompany many of those merited posts, and that is often (not always) a common denominator. Placement has it´s saying too, but you need to figure that out for yourself.

An easy kick-start is to browse through the list of merit stats here: merit stats. If you’re up for something more complex, you can take a look here (warning - number intensive):Merit Dashboard

The rank doesn't matter to earn merit. The only one thing you have to do, it keeps making helpful and useful posts on here. Because the merit will be given by random bitcointalk members. They need to see something special in your posts to give merit.

Quickest way to learn is to click on  the merit section of someone's profile and read what they merited or received merit for.

I merit stuff that makes me think, entertains or informs me.

Some think writing metres of florid nothingness will do the trick like the post above. No it won't. Make your point and leave.

people compete to create something to get an award and be remembered by the local community, if you are lucky to get a commission, as well as the merit in bitcointalk, you make a post or help answer about the members' problems here then they are greatly helped by your answers and they give you a free merit for you, in my opinion if you are very strange if you ask what merit is for, in my opinion merit is an award where those who have worked hard to achieve something.

It doesn't look like you are a newbie. Did you buy this account?

Looking at post history, that account has created a lot of topics already.

Another user asked the same few days ago. Just read his/her thread if you are really interested about merit https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.52896480

I have already checked all those links which is in the thread you referred

Most of the topics I have started are related to my services I offer under Services section

FYI, I am not a newbie and most specifically I never used to buy any accounts from a third party.
