True. I agree. Social media sites nowadays are a great platform when it comes to promoting a website or anything. It is easier to use compared on making another website just to promote your website. In addition to that, people are very hooked with social media sites that's why it is more convenient to promote on it.

Two ideas for you. Do a giveaway. Something cheap like a smartphone or headphones for like 100$. Have people register on your site and maybe use it in order to participate in the giveaway. The other idea is commercial banners in torrent trackers. This will get you some clicks I'm quite sure.

this could be pricey but definitely worth since you can target users by its demographics. i once did this before for a period of time, its effective but my boss spent about $2500 in a month a a half just to promote his site. the amount spent was also earned along the way. this is going to be effective if your products and services are also worth buying and you know the market.

Try to share your website on social media sites. Build up an audience on social sites.

The best will be to have a budget for paid traffic and use ads like facebook ads or google ads to drive traffic to your website.

Well you can start with the simple and free stuffs, like Facebook page, Twitter and other social sites like that. There you can get a lot of users to start using your site. After that you can always pay for commercials on some really visited site. But i think that in time and with good activity, Facebook and social sites will do just fine.

Just a word of warning:

A GOOD SEO person will help greatly with a website, however SEO is NOT a onetime thing... SEO is a living process that needs to happen through the life of the website. Buying services that offer backlinks and one time boosts will often end up getting negative marks for your website on google. Good SEO costs $$$, but for the most part, you are right, the common stuff you see floating around for $20/$50 will typically do more harm than good.
