The question just is: what is risk of "fading" of wood?

Depends on the type of wood plus the treatment the woods gets. Usually pieces are put in a furnace at a certain temp, i forget, to kill everything in the wood and dry it out,  this improves lifespan greatly. after that the piece is oiled to give it a protective layer. after this you'd be re-oiling once every 10 years if kept dry and clean i guess.

I think 'old oak' is more than sufficient for this task. Old oak is 'older than a 1000 years' which means 800 years is also acceptable apparently. Old oak is rare but 'quelle surprise': I can hook you up  Cheesy

Make sure the ink and paper are waterproof, or at least seal them safely in some plastic container. Make sure they don't get burned in a fire or get destroyed by external influences. You might be best off with splitting the private key into multiple pieces (x of n pieces needed to restore the key) and store those pieces in different locations (houses). Make sure no one can get hold of >= x pieces of your key. If feasible, you should also encrypt the key with a passphrase for even more security.

Just to notice, you can get one for like 10-20 (max 30) euros and we are talking about the best price/quality options!

For sure:

The main problem is that plastic isn't the most stable commodity. Ultraviolet light and ozone can have a negative impact on it...but as I said it's an interesting approach Wink

You are much more paranoid than me lol. I just made multiple laminated BIP38-encrypted paper wallets and keep in different places, hoping they won't all fail in the same period of time.

First buy a metal case,
Then, dig up a hole in your backyard in midnight and burry it Grin

Or you can dig up a hole in your basement, it would be more secure Grin

Or in the forest Cheesy

Maybe I hide it in a book or so Cheesy

When you say book I got a brilliant idea.
First you buy a very long and boring book. (les miserables for instance Grin)
Then buy some "highlighter pens" each different colors.

Then Create your own encryption method (ceaser's maybe, details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesar_cipher)
Last step; start to highlight each encrypted characters of the private key Grin
you can highlight priv key 1's chars green, 2nd's blue etc.

Don't worry no one will check your really boring novels Grin

Hello,

I'm using paper wallets a long time now. But my question now is:

Does anyone have an idea how I can store my paper wallet secure?

Which paper is the best that the wallet data will not fade?

Thanks in advance!
Why not seal it into foil that's transparent? Should protect against moisture and fading.

Lamination would lock it in pretty well.  Just do a home kit (Don't ship it off to a company and trust then with wallet).

I think one of the biggest things is printer, use one in private a "dumb" printer is best but a lot will be able to store prints temporary.

There are also things such as silver wallets.  They provide storage and also you can see if it's been opened because of sticker.

I'm using a very old printer without internet connection etc. to print out my paper wallets. But thanks for the suggestions!

Carve it into stone. If people do it since the paleolitic, you can do it yourself.
Preference to places where no one would think something valuable would be stored, but with no ristk of the carvings being eliminated in some way

Make sure it's quality paper and ink, and laminate it. You do not want it to become worn out. Also, I have once bought a simple fire proof briefcase safe from a bankrupt auction from a company for $20,- (since the current economy there are plenty of these auctions), that is where is store paper. So laminate etc. to keep the quality and the safe + fire proof incase of emergency.

If you have a safe place, store it in a second location and you're as safe as I can think of.

i don't think paper will not make any difference, any normal printer paper will do. it depends more on the printer that you are using. keep the printed paper in a safe place that you keep your documents.
and besides you can cover the paper with plastic which is called lamination.that way it will last forever.

That's what i did mean, don't know why OP does ignore it...probably the best and cheapest way.

Sorry, I haven't ignored it Cheesy Just forgot to answer...

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'm going to buy a laminator which I can also use for future paper wallet presents. Thanks in advance!

Something like these solutions might work for your needs:

https://www.cryobit.co/cold-storage-products/cryo-card/

Of if you'd like to craft your own steel wallet step by step:

http://www.instructables.com/id/A-Stainless-Steel-Bitcoin-Wallet/

Here are some other buying options as well:

https://bitkee.com/

Thanks for the sites!

My fear is just that the private key doesn't work anymore after encrypting it (or I lose the password for the BIP encryption).
It shouldn't be possible that it won't work since private key won't change. You still have the original unencrypted private key in your computer if you generated it there though. Either recite the password a few times during the day or write down the password and store them in a few secure places.
