Oh my, another one!
I'm tired of those merit posts. Can't we censor the word?

What are the main criteria for merit? Does it require long articles or were the early members given merit after signing up? I think this merit will be very difficult for new members.

You need to be active in the topics, as well as write useful articles for users on the topic of crypto currency. Also you can search for bugs or errors on the forum, and report this to the moderators.

I am very particular about this issue because I wanted to take part in a particular signature campaign whose minimum qualification was "MEMBER". I really loved the concept of the campaign and would have loved to take part. Since i did not meet the minimum requirement, I could not join. I hope someone will show me the way. I need some merits, thank you.

They will pay you merit if you make positive contributions to the BCT community. Articles are not worth anything, there will be no merit for you.
When you join the bonus campaign you are hard to increase rank in the forum

I have been on  bitcointalk platform for about 2 months now. I have graduated from Newbie Grin and I am now a Junior Member. In fact i cannot wait to become a member, full member, legendary member etc. My post count increases by day but i have not received a single merit.

1.  How can I earn some merits?

2. Do i have to buy them?

I looked at your post history, and most of the posts are pretty generic one or two line sentences which did not add a lot to the conversation, or did not help anyone in particular.
One example I found was this:

Quote from: Nanashev
YAAYYYY! In bitcoin we trust. What happened last year was wonderful but this year is gonna be superb. Bitcoin will make history this year. The time to invest in bitcoin is now. I keep preaching and i am not gonna stop. This is the time to HODL.

One thing that really helps to understand when people receive merit, is checking out other users and try to understand for and and when they receive merits.
My post that received the most merits was a post in which i encouraged beginners to stick with this forum, and give them guidelines on how to become successful here. This post even received a merit by theymos himself, the creator and owner of this forum. I can only recommend you to read it, here is the link:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.40866526

In short:

- Begin to read a lot, before commenting on things.
- Try to understand the concept of signature campaigns, and everything that is connected to it (spammy threads, people getting paid to post 20x per week). Then you will understand what kind of posts you should 100% avoid trying to post: posts with 2-3 sentences, that are not part of the conversation of a thread but simply reply to the original posters question, disregarding the whole conversation that happened before you.
- Always read through all comments, try to quote posters before you if you have something to comment, add or critisize about what someone else said.
- Try to stay on top of your English, proof read your posts and make sure there are as few mistakes as possible (it shows your respect towards possible readers). If you are not very good at English you can try sites like https://www.deepl.com to translate your sentences into decent English.
- Have a point you are trying to make and if it resonates with people, you will quickly see how more people respond to you and take you more serious.

If you follow these rules, your first merit might not be that far away. I wish you best of luck =)

Merit system which is created is really a unfortunate thing for newbies because people who were active in bitcointalk before the merit system has already got advantage and they are ruling here, and you will get merit only if you are able to help the community by helping the users when they ask the questions and in need.Higher ranked members expect you to answer in an exceptional way ,and still their isn't a guarantee that you will get merit as no one really cares for Jr members, people give you all sorts of imaginary answers ,but this is the truth what i'm saying. But never get disappointed try your best to help the community being selfless because a single number of merit doesn't define your worth.

Good luck Wink

well said.. actually many old members don't contribute much but they were rewarded when the system was implemented.

It's just a luck for them not sure whom to escalate this issue with the unfair concept of merit. We need equity instead of equality for a good and greater growth of community.

You can earn merits by posting quality and helpful posts. We newbies just have to be patient enough in ranking up. Find time and effort to browse other posts of those members who has many merits so that we can learn how to create constructive posts and gain some information about the topic that they are posting.

but i have not received a single merit.
Simply because you are not participating in real discussions. Avoid posting in megathreads so that other members will appreciate and see you replies.
2. Do i have to buy them?
Definitely no! (This is a self explanatory issue). Do not just stay in spam boards such as Bitcoin and Alternate Boards.

Never try to buy a merit otherwise you will risk your account been ban or receiving red trust which will make it worthless. The best thing to do is to post a quality post that will add a contribution to the forum.

Take a look at your last posts. Do you think any of them helped any other forum member? Earning merits requires a lot of effort and time to write proper and helpful answers. Try to answer threads to help people, not to raise your post count and you will earn merits in no time.

To answer your questions,  1. You earn merits when members who have smerits give them to you. And I can see that there's really no trick needed in order for you to get them. You will soon get  them when the community feels you're already deserving of merits. 2. Don't even think of offering to buy merits. Just contribute to the community and the community will reward you if you're deserving already.

Have you ever read the threads about merit? From the way you post, it seems you don't read it yet.
Check these links:
- https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/merit-new-rank-requirements-2818350

Buying merit is not allowed. You'll get tagged for sure if you do it.
