While you are correct when you say that there is no way to be sure which of our bets will be the next to win, the real issue the OP has is that due to lending that money to a friend, and said friend going back on their word to pay them immediately, they were unable to make a bet as big as they wanted and this diminished their profits, and I think that what we must learn here is that there are many people out there that do not take their promises seriously and we must always take this into account, especially when it comes to a loan.

You are right, though it be hard sometimes for our minds not to feel that regretful feelings for past mistakes, most especially when we remember what that or such mistake have cost us, but the truth remains that, what has happened has happened, and there is nothing that can be done to change what is already in the past, and it's effect, even if we are still going through the effect.

We can only try not to make same mistake again, and also, it's very important for us not to dwell in the past because doing so could cloud our sense of proper reasoning which could also lead to further and future mistakes again.

That's not really the point, the outcomes already certain, that OP has won the money and the thing that he was regretting the most was that he let that friend borrow the money which could've increased his potential wins, it's not living in the past, that's just hindsight and it's always 20/20. Totally agree with not everything is about money but the lesson here is that promises shouldn't be spoken and taken lightly, they might be just words but they should be taken seriously, I don't like that kind of friend that promises something and then turns back their word on it, that person will stab you in the back, you and them don't know it yet but that's a sign of a friend that's only there for your prosperity and times of fun.

This loan is only for emergencies where someone needs money to meet their needs. But if the loan is not for something urgent, someone doesn't need to borrow money, especially for gambling, because it's just for fun, which we don't always do.
