Is there a way to determine the number of characters in the wallet password?

I don't know about PBKDF2 implementation on Bitcoin Core, but AFAIK it's impossible. I checked such possibility with PBKDF2 tools online (e.g. https://asecuritysite.com/encryption/PBKDF2z) and i got same length on different password with different length.

Is there a way to determine the number of characters in the wallet password?  I haven't used mine since April 2018 and for some reason the password I remember using isn't working.  I installed the btcrecovery in python and have tried a few lists of possible variations of my password up to 109k possibilities, but still nada.  If I knew how many characters it was, it would help a lot for making my password lists.  And ideas?  It's very important, of course.  I don't think anyone could have messed with it because I had the wallet.dat file backed up in a rar stored away safely.  I tried two completely different backups of the wallet file.

If you have lost your wallet password then it's like curtains for your coins. Try to recover with your seed, if you have that with you. Just few small things which we always ignore at the time of installing wallet can save us later from big troubles.
This is a little bit unusual, owning a huge of amount of btc and he forgot password because usually when you own big amount of btc you must have a duplicate of your keys or password. If he just keeps the seed he has a big chance of recovering his wallet. An owner of a wallet should makes other ways to remember it to recover the wallet.

Meanwhile, he is a bounty hunter.
Do you really think that if he is a bounty hunter he needs to post here like this ?! Sad
Add the fact that the account was created in 2018 and the posts were just bounty reports. Another thing to consider is that the password was changed recently.

I tend to agree that the account was stolen and that it's being used to hack someone else thru this "I forgot password...email me"

Meanwhile, he is a bounty hunter. I don't underestimate the amount of money he earns, but the truth is he can't forget the wallet that he uses regularly.
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my thoughts. You could be someone who picked it up somewhere, or somehow you stole it. Just maybe  Wink

Anyway, if that's true, I hope you can get your money back soon. Good luck!

See here:
Are you able to prove that the wallet is yours? How did you just "forget it"? I would assume most people that are holding a sum that great would not just "forget" their password.
well there is even this certain person that throw away a harddisk containing 7500 BTC and even in this forum alone many people actually encounter the same problem which is forgetting their password from wallet.dat you can try to search it up so yeah, forgetting it is possible and those early birds who hold bitcoin from the time when bitcoin is not popular some of them have this problem.
..
..

Anything is possible. Maybe he had that wallet for a long time. It's easy to forget when your coins are worth $500 each but much harder when they're $5000 each. Wink

Hello friend , its totally like a hallowen joke for me ,
how u dont even remember a simple password created by you , or maybe if its too difficult to remember, u must be have a secondary option like copy it on somewhere.
for remember , we still can find the wallet.dat by recuva or some apps like that , but if the password, of course i have no idea how to solved it.
Yeah, it is a bit of story made event. Although the price of bitcoin way back 2014 is not high as what its price now, I can't believe that you did not even protect it. The price range of bitcoin in 2014 played at $300 to $400, so if it is 18 btc then it is alteady a lot to consider the password as signicant key for the money. Aside there are options for secondary passwords like mnemonic, set of words and even alphanumerics combination to secured the wallet. If you insist that this happened then I guess no one's going to believe on this.

Your story is really hard to believe. How can you have up to 18 Bitcoin and not remember your password?
I don't have up to that amount but I don't joke with my passwords or the 12 word phrase. And, oh! That reminds me, what about your twelve phrase backup?

Password doesn't even matter that much, your backup phrase is the most important, if you lose your password you can still make use of the 12 phrase to restore your wallet. So if you're saying that you have up to 18 BTC and you don't even have your backup phrase and also forgot your password, nobody is going to believe your story man.

The same thing happened to one of my friend still he can't recover the password because the password combination 12 characters with number he try all methods which is available options but he can't so if forgotten the password of your wallet.dat it will lose of your bitcoins.
My suggestion to you can try all passwords what you remember and note that in excel sheet and try maybe it will help you.

This happened to my friend too, he has almost 3 BTC way back before when he's still doing mining, but he leaves it in his email and after few years when he discovered that the value of BTC becomes high, he's trying to recover his email, but he already forgot his password on it and he can't find any ways for his email to recover, sad thing but needs to move on.

It is not logical for me if something trivial like this can happen.

Even if it isn't his you won't crack his password. This is a waste of time. Bitcoin is made in such a way that you can lose your wallet dat. Things like that happen but you have the password to protect you from simple theft like your friend coming in and downloading your wallet onto a thumb drive while you're in the kitchen or something...

It seems strange if you forget your own password and before creating it, you have to anticipate or find other ways when you forget and you can open it according to your storage in a safe place to view the password that you saved.
and what's even more strange, why don't you think that you have a wallet that is very valuable and related to your assets and you really have to remember it, and that will be your experience because in my opinion there are many ways to store passwords correctly and safely it all depends on you choose and can remember it easily.

It is one of the most important thing that you need to remember so that you wouldn't lost contact with your wallet. If you really give great importance to your money, that large amount wouldn't go out of your hand. Let's just hope they can give assistance on how you can recover or change you password cause that's a very huge money. Be mindful also cause maybe you got hacked and troubled with your wallet cause they are dessiminated all over the place these days so try checking it out too.

I think the password that you have forgotten cannot be changed again when you write it down. all you can do is remember the password that you wrote down. maybe it's something close to you, like your name with a unique code, special date, date of birth, name of the film, or something else. if you can't remember it, I think you can't take the bitcoin you have. try harder to remember.

It's totally logical for early adopter to lose password because they consider bitcoin as nothing back then and only using it for experimental purpose.

I don't think anyone would ever forget the password of an account with 18.2 Btc, I honestly (without condemnation) consider it a crack to steal.
I had 0.2 Btc, and did a backup 10x to be sure.
I didn't sleep for 2 nights in a row, I was afraid that someone would not enter my account.
Now, maybe he really forgot, but I don't think it's about that much, or maybe he's planning on obscuring so much money for someone to help him, Caution!
Well im sure that if you are an early adopters and own 100 BTC but at that time which only worth $0.008 each you won't backup it 10x will you? It's just logical for people to forget password because bitcoin wasn't a thing back then and to cash it out is a lot harder compared to now.

It will be very hard for you to gather some information according to your problem about forgetting your passworf that has a lot of bitcoins, because anyone can say that they have a wallet which is forgotten or hack and they want to recover it from those necessary problems. First, we must verified that the account you are talking about that has been forgotten was really yours and if the account is have some email binding in which you can prove that it is yours. Second, you must provide that this account is yours by filling up the necessary details in order to recover the account that has been lost.

This could indicate, that its not seed/HD wallet.
Its old wallet just password protected.
If pass is that long (13 char) its bad, but its good also because you know how long it is.
It will be really hard to crack if you don't have any more clues about your password. You need first to indicate what characters you used in your password (letters, numbers?, big letters?, special characters?) and then only then start to crack.

The wallet is yours you are the one who created it and I'm sure you have the things needed to be written down to make your account secured specially the seeds of your wallet, you can easily recover your wallet with your seeds without knowing your password for sure.

Its always recommended to write seed on paper or store it offline, never store it electronically. Still no one care about this while creating the wallet. I always do this practice of saving seed on paper and in few cases it helped me in recovering my coins.
If OP has seed with him he can still get his coins else RIP his coins.

It's quite not appropriate to ask for help at the same time not monitor the people that would like to help you anyway, thus readily providing the email address you have. Though, the thing here is to recover a password, I think brute forcing will not be the best idea, your best way is to backtrack your transactions way back before and look on your harddrive to scan and search for possible information that might lead you to recover your bitcoins.

It is not logical for me if something trivial like this can happen.

Because for us, the only reason why a person could seek their lost bitcoin is when they are one of the early adopters and bitcoin. And having an account which isn't really old is already a thing for us to doubt.

Is the password matter in this scenario? I will say No as what matters most is your Mnemonic phrase. Besides, it is difficult to forget a password that holds such an amount of BTC if truly it is yours as claimed.

Anything is possible. Maybe he had that wallet for a long time. It's easy to forget when your coins are worth $500 each but much harder when they're $5000 each. Wink

Hate to say it but you can treat it as lost. The only way is if you pick your brain for the typical passwords you like to use. Maybe it's something with your girlfriend or your pet's name. If it's a randomly generated phrase like s1Q2xvy_k! you're fucked.

Things like this should be kept safe such as emails, passwords, and important accounts. Maybe you have a lot of accounts in different platform that's why you forgot it, the best solution to avoid this thing is to keep a note with all your accounts in it. Important thing should be a priority not to forget.
Since it's your account, you're also capable of accessing it. Just try to remember you password. If you use same password to some accounts, then you can try it.

The password is irrelevant, only the seed words matter. When you create a wallet, you are supposed to write down a series of words in a piece of paper, you can recover your wallet with that.

It's not irrelevant, wallet file + password allow you to access your coins, so it's a really bad idea to be careless about it. As for seeds, not all wallets have them, Bitcoin Core doesn't use them and will not use them in close future. If we are talking about wallet files from early days, there's almost no chance that those wallets have seeds, so finding or cracking password is the only way to access the coins again.
Which one wallet he use for saving bitcoin balance, how available to recovery their account without know which one exchange or wallet kind for saving his bitcoin assets, maybe he made something joke for interested many people in bitcointalk tread become famous with his topic, I think he has many bitcoin assets in his wallet will know by many people in telegram channel to as for people how to unlock his wallet.

First and foremost, how can you have such an amount of Bitcoin in your wallet and forget the password to the wallet? Well, you just have to accept that your Bitcoins in the wallet  is lose forever. Please don't waste your time trying to get a way to restore your wallet without the password. Once you don't remember the password, it is useless trying to restore your wallet.

You'll never know how you'll get the filthy trojan.
It may be a file that has been infected, but it may also be just some naive user who purchased a fake wallet file that allegedly contains 18.2 BTC, and now he needs someone to crack it. There are many examples of forgotten passwords behind which is the true wealth, but a good deal of such cases are very likely fraud. In any case, a 13-character password is an impossible mission to brute-force, unless it is some very simple combination or word from a dictionary.

a little strange in my opinion, that amount of money around 18.2 BTC is not a little, but you are that easy to forget your password and not record let alone keep your backups of your wallet well, I still doubt it is your money, but I am not accusing you of stealing from your friends, I do not have much knowledge about forgetting the password on the wallet, whereas you also did not mention what wallet you are using? if you use an online wallet like blockchain, just forget about your money because they don't provide the password forgetting option

If you have the passphrase or the private key of the wallet then that should not be a problem. Just uninstall the wallet and reinstall it again but when setting it up use the restore wallet/recover wallet function. However, if you did not save the keyphrase of your wallet then i am sorry your funds are lost forever. This should make you learn how to backup and write down your wallet details in a book. I have been doing this ever since i got into this space and i have not encountered any situation of this sort.

So 18.2 BTC has just been added to the number of Bitcoin lost because of forgotten recovery phrases, if you're asking for how to recover your password, then I guess you don't know how bitcoin fundamentally works and hence you didn't even back-up your wallet and save the recovery phrases, a password doesn't really matter, what matters is that recovery phrase.

If recovering an account was possible without the phrase, then every big wallet with lots of Bitcoin would have been "Recovered" by tech gurus out there, sorry for your loss, I think you should go and learn the fundamentals of Bitcoin and learn how it really works to avoid future losses from amateur mistakes like this.

Let say it is your wallet and there is no way for you to remember your password then there is only one way left, that is brute force.
There are some program can do it, but your password length is 13, if we count digits in alphabet only, then you have to try 26^13=2,481,152,873,203,736,576 times, it would take your time.

You mean your wallet was created since 2014? It will be hard to recover if you were not able to at least note the important information of your wallet.
Try to remember every password you have used before, including your birthday, nicknames, codenames, numbers you always use, etc.

Maybe it was your birthday or something relevant to you? Maybe you've written it down and you forgot where you put it. Try to find those if you can. If you can't, I think there's a software called btcrecover which brute force forgot passwords. Maybe you should give it a try to see if you are able to get the password on your own.

this is probably your best bet, assuming you have some idea what that passwordis but your just slightly wrong. like it's password123 but you're trying PassWord321 or the like.

People should understand that there are some difference with cryptocurrency wallets compared to the usual accounts we have online. It is the big responsibility of the owner of the wallet that all information necessary to open and operate the said wallet are kept safe and away from anyone so that there will be no major problem that can encountered soon. Certainly, some learning curves can be so critical and we should never forget them. We should not be treating our wallet information as a toy that we can play with.

Are you able to prove that the wallet is yours? How did you just "forget it"? I would assume most people that are holding a sum that great would not just "forget" their password.
well there is even this certain person that throw away a harddisk containing 7500 BTC and even in this forum alone many people actually encounter the same problem which is forgetting their password from wallet.dat you can try to search it up so yeah, forgetting it is possible and those early birds who hold bitcoin from the time when bitcoin is not popular some of them have this problem.

to OP, try to remember and try all the combination of word or letter in your mind because bruteforcing it would take millenias.

The wallet is yours you are the one who created it and I'm sure you have the things needed to be written down to make your account secured specially the seeds of your wallet, you can easily recover your wallet with your seeds without knowing your password for sure.

If you lost that then you can forget it. Of course, the same is true if you have a wallet.dat file without the password, it doesn't matter if you offer 90%+ of the money for cracking it, you won't have it at any price as no one can crack it with current technology.

Unless that password happens to be a single word or some idiotic simple combination (ie. two words) that could be brute forced with dictionary attacks.
