The thing that bothered me the most when the merit system was implemented by theymos was that I failed to reach the minimum activity "750" to get the 1000 merit airdrop as a Legendary requirement. But I don't have to blame anyone, including the merit system, because this is my own fault for not having enough time to actively post a lot.
Even so, you can still reach the highest level (Legendary) with the merit you get from other users as an appreciation for the quality posts you write. Your journey has almost reached the finish line to reach the highest level, you only need 138 merit to level up to Legendary. If you are always consistent and continue to improve the quality on the forum, I am very sure you will reach high level in the near future.

Feeling hopeless for a while I thought it was natural because I am also a human who has the desire to achieve high rank in forum. But this system has taught me good thing despite my stupidity, selfishness, and ignorance of the rules. The clear intention to make changes is reflected in the relentless effort to improve myself and quality so that contribution become a word of encouragement that clearly gives its own satisfaction effect when accompanying free time on the forum and in the end I am almost close to that rank which is only separated by 140 merit again.

About the weirdness the OP said in the thread, I don't think it's the only evidence of airdrop merit being awarded to all eligible users regardless if they are still active or not. Theymos distributes it equally to registered users "anyone who qualifies" except Brand New and Newbie rank and Junior Member rank.

<…> if my memory is not wrong, that time coincided at the end of 2017 the merit system came into effect.
January the 25th 2018 really.

<…> after getting a uniform amount of merit they leave this forum.
I doubt Merit had any influence on grandfathered account that kept their Ranks and received an amount of Merits in accordance to their rank. The airdrop applied to all ranked accounts at the time, regardless of whether they were active or not at the time (coherence between Rank and Merits). Those leaving or having left would do so/have done so anyhow.

I was scrolling through this thread when I looked at the merit values of some of the people posting. About %85 of the people who posted on this thread have a uniform amount of merits. Like 100, 250, 1000, 1250, etc. They also seemed to leave the forum right after getting their uniform amount of merits. Anyone have an explanation?
Actually this was a question 4 years ago when the merit system was implemented in this forum, if my memory is not wrong, that time coincided at the end of 2017 the merit system came into effect.
A uniform amount of merit as you mentioned above (100, 250, 1000, 1250) is given by forum admin based on their activity count and rank before the merit system was implemented. You're assuming that there's a large distribution of free merit, but after getting a uniform amount of merit they leave this forum.
It should be underlined, after they get the same amount of merit, their account will never rank up again as long as they don't get additional merits even if their activities reach legendary.

I won't repeat what others already said. I just add that they haven't left forum shortly after getting airdropped merit. Merit system was introduced in 2018 and users in topic that you use as example become inactive way before it. Back then there were no merit system and they were just Hero, Legendary, Sr. Members without merit stuff.
I tend to forget that a lot of newer members here don't realize that the merit system wasn't always a thing, that it's only been around for just over 3.5 years.  OP already got his answer, so I won't repeat it.  I'm sure if you go back to threads from 2010, you'll see that most of the members who posted have merit counts that represent exactly what was airdropped in Jan. 2018.  And man, if you go back that far, it'll seem like the forum was a completely different one.  There weren't signature campaigns back then, and I think the moderation was a lot less strict.
3.5 years already? Damn, time flies so fast...

You got the answer you're looking for. They all explained it. As you can see, I did not get a uniform merit since I did not get it from airdropped merits. My rank was newbie when the merit was implemented so as what they have explained, those forum users received merits according to their rank.

Some users don't even realise activity never used to be a thing either. It was vastly easier to rank up prior to it, because it was soley based on post count. I remember reaching a certain rank, but then activity was introduced, and I went back down to the rank below. I can't remember the exact ranks. Although, I think activity was implemented around June 2013 I believe. Judging by this thread anyway:

I read somewhere that he did that in order to help those that were very close to Legendary rank but at the introduction of merit system they were short on activity. Reasonable decision as it's not easy at all to get 500 merit and I I'm sure those affected were in quiet a shock. I know I would be in the similar situation.
Yeah, if you were around when the merit system was rolled out (very unexpectedly, because there was no talk about it beforehand) and were a Hero member with enough activity to get to Legendary and were just waiting for the week when you'd rank up, you probably were pulling your hair out when you discovered that you now had to earn 500 merits to get there.

Most of the members and are inactive and received merit as airdrop when it was first introduced in the forum and you could possibly see some have left the forum in 2017 and some are still active but not making up the post quality to get even single merit as this thread is literally very old.This thread has 10-12 pages and you can see lot of members with similar amount of merits but some has gained merits in past 120 days also and now stand at 1064 or 1250 as said by you so it means they are active and gained merits for their posts.But many members left out the forum due to not making up such quality posts and were not able to cope up with forum and left this which you might have come across.

Hero Member = 500 merit airdrop
Legendary = 1000 merit airdrop
Initially, Hero member got 500 merit, Legendary get 1000 merit, not smerits. Smerit is calculated with the formula.

Later Hero member with >=775 activity got 500 more merit so 775+ activity Hero members got 1000 merit as same as Legendary members.

The airdrop smerit depends on last year activity (see the formula) so Legendary members got the same 1000 merit but they get different smerit because of last year activity.
The exact formula was:

Code:
yearActivity = activity in the last ~year, max 378
freeMerit = the merit (not sMerit) you started with
modifier =
  0.1 if member
  0.2 if full member
  0.25 if sr member
  0.35 if hero
  0.4 if legendary

return (yearActivity/378) * modifier * freeMerit

So the most you could get is if you were a Legendary who maxed out your activity points in the last year, in which case you would get 1 * 0.4 * 1000 = 400 sMerit.

Note that I later made an adjustment giving 500 extra merit to some hero members, but no extra sMerit was given here.

I'll probably publish a dump of the initial sMerit at some point.

I decided that the previous allocation was too unfair in this area, so everyone with activity >= 775 got 500 more merit if they didn't already have 1000 merit (and also Lutpin). No extra sMerit, though.

That isn't strange, since their accounts are old and might they don't have enough activity to rank up after receiving airdropped merit that based on their activity when theymos introduced merit system.  As you can see, they had the same merit and activity, these are the two requirements upon ranking your account.  All accounts were inactive in late 2014 and theymos introduced a merit system in 2018.

Please read and understand this thread  "FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit", so that you will have an idea of this stuff going on.

Hero Member = 500 merit airdrop
You are correct. I will just add that theymos after the launch of the merit system made some tweaks, which gave some hero members an additional 500 merits, making it 1000 in total.

The airdrop merit that each rank get are all different. If I'm not mistaken, the number of activity and ranking they achieve when the merit system is implemented will determine the number of merit airdrop they get. See the arrangement below.

Brand New = 0 merit airdrop
Newbie = 0 merit aidrop
Junior Member = 0 merit airdrop
Member = 10 merit airdrop
Full Member = 100 merit airdrop
Senior Member = 250 merit airdrop
Hero Member = 500 merit airdrop
Legendary = 1000 merit airdrop

My rank when the merit system was implemented in 2018 was senior member because my activity was sufficient and I got 250 merit airdrop. So nothing strange in my opinion.

That means those users are not active anymore when they get the base value of merit when it was first introduced. Since those merit value you mentioned corresponds user's rank when theymos intrduces merit system on the very first time.

They also seemed to leave the forum right after getting their uniform amount of merits.
You can check other old threads where most replies came from inactive accounts and it will look the same.

This is an old thread; a thread from 2014. All of their merits are airdropped means they got it free according to their rank & activity. This is nothing strange. Most of them are not anymore active in the forum. Hence, the merit amount is a rounding one.
By the way, you have included 1250 as well; it means the user earned at least 250 merits
