Devils hope to build on first win against Coyotes

Season series: The New Jersey Devils won two games against the Arizona Coyotes in 2014-15. Devils goaltender Cory Schneider made 38 saves in a 3-0 victory on Feb. 23 in Newark, N.J., and 30 saves in a 4-1 victory on March 14 in Glendale, Ariz.

Coyotes team scope: The Coyotes, who have lost two straight, play the first of a five-game East Coast road trip. The team did not practice Monday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Center Joe Vitale may not accompany the Coyotes to New Jersey after sustaining an upper-body injury in a fight with Kevan Miller of the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

"He's going to miss some time," coach Dave Tippet told the Coyotes website. Vitale had been a healthy scratch the first four games of the season.

Tippet said he's hopeful that left wing Jordan Martinook (lower body), who missed the game against the Bruins, can resume skating Tuesday.

Captain Shane Doan will be playing in his 1,400th NHL game.

Devils team scope: Defenseman Jon Merrill returned to practice Monday after missing a 2-1 victory against the New York Rangers on Sunday because of a stomach illness. He is listed as day-to-day, according to coach John Hynes.

Left wing Tuomo Ruutu will miss his second straight game because of an unspecified injury, according to NorthJersey.com. Goaltender Cory Schneider, who made 26 saves in the win against the Rangers, will make his third straight start.

The Devils' win Sunday was the first for Hynes as an NHL coach, and he said he hopes the good times continue Tuesday.

"It feels great," Hynes said of getting his first win. "I am really happy for the team. I feel like we've gone through a lot of changes since training camp. I really credit the players' attitudes every day. They have worked to get better and it is gratifying for our guys to get a win after all of their hard work."
