How to Play Hold’em to Win — Part 2 — Setting a Game

Now, back to business. In the Part 1 of How to play Hold’em to Win, we covered all the key terms used in the game. It was more like a Poker vocabulary lesson.

In this post, we will cover how a Texas Hold’em poker game is set for playing.

1. First of all, buy-in
Your chip buy-in is usually 100 times of the big blind. Which means, if your small and big blinds are 50 cents and $1 respectively, then your buy-in will be around $100. About 10% of your chips will comprise of your smallest bet, i.e. 50 cent chips, and the rest will include $1 and more.

2. Pick a dealer
Even if there is a person exclusively dealing in the game, as is the case in casinos and online poker games, the Dealer button marks one player as a dealer.

This is to indicate card dealing will start from the left of that person. The dealer button keeps rotating clockwise upon completion of each hand.

To choose the first dealer, deal one card to each player, and the player with the highest card will be the first dealer.

3. Putting the blinds
Blinds are forced bets made by two players to the left of the dealer. The player to the left of the dealer puts a small blind, and the player to the left of the small blind puts a big blind.

Big blind is usually the same as the amount of the minimum bet. The small blind is half the amount of the big bet.

4. Deal hole cards
After the blinds are placed, hole cards are dealt to players one after another, one card at a time.

Start dealing with the player to the left of the player with the dealer button.

Cryptonia Poker is here with a series of small articles that will first quickly teach you how to play Texas Hold’em poker, and then give tips on how to play to win.

In Part 1 here, we will start with a small guide to key terms used in Texas Hold’em. By the end of this article you’ll be talking the Texas Hold’em talk.

Button: It indicates the player who will act as the dealer in the on-going game. Even if there is a professional dealer dealing the cards, the button is still used to mark one player as a dealer, as the dealing of cards starts to the left of that player, and is done clockwise. After the hand is complete, the button is moved to the left of the player, making the next player the dealer.

Blinds: Compulsory short and big blinds are placed by the two players to the left of the dealer. These define the stakes of the game, going forward.

Buy-in: These are the chips that each player buys to play the game. This is typically fifty to hundred times of the big blind. However, there is no upper limit to it.

Hole cards: The dealer deals two cards to each player, to start with, dealing one card at a time, going clockwise. The two cards with the players are their hole cards.

Betting rounds: There are a maximum of four betting rounds in Texas Hold’em. The betting continues till all the players fold except one, or by the end of the fourth betting round, whichever precedes.

Flop: Dealing of the first three community cards on the table.

Pre-flop: The game preceding the dealing of flop cards. Pre-flop betting starts with the player to the left of the big blind.

Pot: The place were all the money bet by all the players is put. The winner of the hand takes it all.

Fold: A player can fold or throw their hole cards without putting any money in the pot.

Call: The player can put the same amount of money as the player before them. In case of the start of the pre-flop, this amount will be the same as the big blind.

Raise: The player can raise the amount of bet than the previous player, i.e. play the amount of the previous players bet plus the amount of an additional bet. In case of the start of the pre-flop, this amount is double that of the big blind. (It can be more than double of the big blind in some games, if the rules allow.)

Check: If no one raises pre-flop, the big blind can check. Check is equivalent to call, but no money is bet.

Round end: A round ends when each player has had a chance to play or bet, and all the non-fold players have bet equal amount of money.

Turn: The fourth community card. Seeing it is called the fourth street.

River: It is the fifth community card. Seeing it is called the fifth street.

All-in: A player bets all his remaining chips.

Showdown: When, after the fourth round, there are more than one player left, then there is a showdown, and the player with the highest cards takes the pot. If two players have similar highest cards, they split the pot.
