Then, let's think outside the box, first considering...

Perhaps a perturbation of a  $  with a padlock or a lockbox,  since a BitCoin is not a plain ol' currency unit --- it's a CryptoCurrency unit.

Don't like it.

Once Bitcoin is mainstream and in massive use, it will be able to use pretty much whatever it wants to and everyone will follow. That's how mainstream things work.

Proposed symbol looks like a nice graphic but I really think that the current symbol is better on the eye in typed form.

Bitcoin might be in relatively early days, but it is too conflicting to change the symbol at this stage, for what is already a confusing concept for the uninitiated?

Don't much care for this particular design, but the current one isn't that great either...

Oldschool!
I think they want to change BTC symbol just coz it has some small similarity with US $ . Liberty dollar got banned over that. So i guess they don't want to have anything similar to $

RIP Mommy
The b with stroke looks like shit in both majuscule and minuscule forms, when reduced to a smaller pt font size. It's going to get ridiculous if you're typing along in a small font as is desirable or required, and have to switch just for that character to higher pt, then back down afterward to continue typing, and in the end you'll have a shittily typeset document where there's big gaps between the lines with the stroked b in it.

Has anyone suggested a flying BTC as follows since Bitcoin is faster to transfer around the world directly to individuals without exception than fiat.

I never saw a flying Bitcoin symbol but for some reason I thought of the advertising being the red bull of Bitcoin it has wings lol.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending
The Dollar is not a D with a line through it... it's a $

The Pound Sterling is not a P with a line through it.... it's a £

Perhaps we're not thinking outside the box enough.

Then, let's think outside the box, first considering...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar_sign#Origin

Quote
The sign is first attested in British, American, Canadian, Mexican and other Spanish American business correspondence in the 1770s, referring to the Spanish American peso,[1][2] also known as "Spanish dollar" or "piece of eight" in British North America, which provided the model for the currency that the United States later adopted in 1785 and the larger coins of the new Spanish American republics such as the Mexican peso, Peruvian eight-real and Bolivian eight-sol coins.

The best documented explanation reveals that the sign evolved out of the Spanish and Spanish American scribal abbreviation "ps" for pesos. A study of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century manuscripts shows that the s gradually came to be written over the p developing a close equivalent to the "$" mark.[3][4][5][6][7]

What may make sense is taking the B & C of BitCoin, then somehow superimpose the two letters to create something pleasant to the eye and unicodeable.

Fair point. Although, I think a lot of people have gotten used to seeing the a "B" associated with bitcoins.

[That said, I don't think they were necessarily thinking "outside the box" when creating those symbols, I think they were just looking for something convenient. £ comes from the latin word "libra" (a measure of weight), and it's widely believed that the $ came from pesos a sort of mashup of P and S due to the trading with Spanish. However, we could take a similar approach and do a mash up of binary and the letter B or something.]

I see no reason why we need a new symbol that a group of idiots can trademark and then try to sell to everyone else at (for them) hopefully a nice sum. It's basically self-perpetuated highway robbery. BTC is just fine as it is 'industry group' be damned.
