When you create a project to migrate from software X to software Y, you normally try to stall all non-critical implementations on software X. Mentions are a nice to have, but not critical, so that could be part of the reason (although this normally applies when transition from X to Y is planned and not too distant in time from each other).

I’m not even sure if mentions are a native feature to SMF 1.1.19 (which seems to date back from 2009). I’ve seen some custom made notification modules created at a later date, for later SMF versions, so it may not even be feasible in the native form. When software is really old, the less you touch it the better in general.

Having said that, it’s one of the top nice to have native on-forum features one would like, in my opinion, from the point of view of creating more dynamic conversations on the forum.

That’s a native feature that is implemented in the future alleged to be software Epochtalk,
Since mention feature can be added in smf, I really don’t get why theymos isn’t/hasn’t considering/considered adding this in this forum. Not everyone uses telegram, some may not be comfortable. Whether it will be implemented in epochtalk forum or not, it should be implemented here as we don’t have a definite time period when new forum software will be available to us.

Bitcointalk does not support mention yet, but you can make use of Ninjastic Telegram bot, you will really like it.

He has been mentioned it before, read once again...

@OP not good idea, troller can create sock puppet accounts and start mentioning random people. You could use watchlist at least....

Been on several forums, the troll mention was never a problem tbh. Anyhow, if you 'ignore' the person it should mute the mentions from them too.

with all the resources Theymos has at his disposal and all the requests for simple forum features, I don't understand why he continues to do nothing except maintain his stony silence.  I'm pretty sure the members who've created the 3rd party applications are excellent coders and probably would have helped Theymos make those features an integral part of the forum instead of being things users have to implement themselves.  Am I way off base here or what?
As far as I know, one of the reasons is that any change to the forum itself increases the security risks, and it can break other things. Trusting third parties to develop features also adds a security risk, while external userscripts don't affect the forum itself.

I'm actually quite okay with the forum as it is. I prefer to use a desktop anyway (and I created my own notifications just the way I like them).

From what I've seen, I don't expect the forum to implement this. If it can be handled by a user application, Admin doesn't need to spend time on it.
No, I'd bet the house this wouldn't be implemented.  And I'm not disparaging those applications created by members at all, but they seem to be like 3rd party aftermarket add-ons which are necessary only because there's so little development on this forum.  As far as the administrator not spending time on things like this, I'm left wondering if there's any time spent at all improving bitcointalk in its current state.

I've got the New Forum Discussion section on ignore, so I'm not sure what's happening on that front, but with all the resources Theymos has at his disposal and all the requests for simple forum features, I don't understand why he continues to do nothing except maintain his stony silence.  I'm pretty sure the members who've created the 3rd party applications are excellent coders and probably would have helped Theymos make those features an integral part of the forum instead of being things users have to implement themselves.  Am I way off base here or what?
I agree with you that there might be some good coders/developers here on the forum that can help theymos in implementing these features on the forum.

However, I can think of one downside to taking help from them. In future, if any upgrade or maintenance needs to be done regarding to these features, those members might not be available at that time. On the other hand, if the new suggested features are worked upon by in house staff, future work related to these features will be easier and in control.

To be honest, I like this, but as DdmrDdmr stated, the idea is already implemented on the new system, which we are still waiting for. It's been on for years, and we don't know how much longer we can wait. There are so many things to upgrade, and we also require a mobile-friendly site. If you do not use Telegram, you can receive notifications from https://bct-quote-notifier.herokuapp.com/ by  @hatshepsut93 I've tried it out once, but I'm not sure how secure it is.

That’s a native feature that is implemented in the future alleged to be software Epochtalk, that will/should/might be the platform to run Bitcointalk on at some point. Chances therefore of implementing the said functionality on the current (very old) software as something native are basically null, thus the external user created solutions mentioned on this thread.

If you want to see what it looks like, there is a screen capture made a couple of years ago on a test platform (that is no longer online):
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.49969776

I believe that the only current test ground is this one:

not everyone uses telegram
LoyceV's notification bot Smiley

forum integration appears to be more user-friendly.
There's also BPIP Extension: user info & extra features add-on/extension, but from what I've seen they don't want to handle data on specific users. Other than that, it might be possible to include this in a browser extension.

That's something I've already mentioned in the post. Telegram isn't for everyone, and forum integration appears to be more user-friendly.

Yes, I know, but it is still the only option for metions and merit received notifications. To be aware of something does not yet indicate the person is using it.

Or maybe he thinks it is not safe enough or something which I believe is otherwise, but this kind of topics has been brought up often and often.

I'm not a coder, but mentions are highly common in many Forums. I'm not sure why this one is an exception, but I believe that if it's introduced, it will make the user experience more basic and it will be easier to identify when a person has been mentioned. I mean something to description below

This is how the forum layout is arrange:

HOME    HELP   SEARCH   PROFILE   MY MESSAGES   MEMBERS   MORE   LOGOUT

By default without any message, it should looks this way:

HOME    HELP   SEARCH   PROFILE   MY MESSAGES      MT    MEMBERS   MORE   LOGOUT

Perhaps if we can get something like this when a user received a mention and message:

HOME    HELP   SEARCH   PROFILE   MY MESSAGES(1)      MENTIONS (5)   MEMBERS   MORE   LOGOUT

  • I'm aware of the topic [TELEGRAM] Yet Another BitcoinTalk Notification BOT (merits, mentions, topics,+) that allows users to be notified of forum activity, but not everyone uses telegram, and you don't have to visit telegram to be notified of mentions. Merit can be seen here and also there, but it's only mentions that aren't notified in the forum.
  • I'm also familiar with script in Chrome and Firefox, but that doesn't appear to be mobile-friendly, in my opinion.

This is only a suggestion, but I've seen them on a lot of forums, and they're a good feature.
