This is debatable. Distinguishing between a good promotion and huge and stupid advertising is a matter of personal preferences really. If you offer a shitty product or service good promotion or marketing won't help you much because people are not fools. Did this forum require a lot of hype or promotion to get widely known? It could accelerate its recognition, of course, but ultimately, it is the content that matters and its quality.
Just a little over a month ago I wore a signature advertising another forum about cryptocurrencies with a fancy interface and a lot of gimmicks, bells and whistles. To see frankly on the internet everything can be measured, thus it’s easier for the companies to know almost instantly if their campaign is working or not, what company or user is interested in their products, from what cities or countries are they, etc.
