Hello everyone!  Newbie to the boards here, but not new to mining...been going at it for a year now, finally broke the 1GH/s barrier about 2 months ago so I figured it was time to join the boards to celebrate.  Grin Hope to see yall around!

Grats on your success. Since I’m pretty new to this and thinking about getting into it mostly as a hobby. How is your profitability over the year you have been doing this? I’m wondering about ROI for initial investment. Anything you would be willing to share about your hardware or how you brok into the game? Did you build a rig or start out using hardware you already had and grow it from there?

I can see that this is highly speculative as far as possible profits go. I like to build things so I’m thinking of setting up a rig but I’m wondering if I should go GPU or FPGA for my initial investment. I see the return on FPGA will be longer but might be more survivable. Right now I’m just using a single 5770 from my gaming rig but obviously that's not a long term solution.

Welcome to the board.

Hey, I've only just heard about bitcoin in the last two weeks when my friend told me my gaming rig was rightly suited for it! I live in Philadelphia PA and I look forward to learning how to get my rig set up and making the highest hash rate I can Cheesy

Hi

I'm Cugnac from Paris, France. I discovered Bitcoin last year and I'm involved in many bitcoin projects with some brilliant (flattery !) european bitcoiners.
I strongly believe that Bitcoin will change the way we use money.

Hello all,

Mostly writing this reply to check off one of my minimum posts. Just found out about BitCoin yesterday and a stayed up all night reading and setting up my computer. I'm a hobby builder so I love the idea of building a rig specifically for this. Although I'm not holding my breath about making money I’m interested in every aspect of this from the computational power to the economic implications. I am also very interested in the anonymity provided by this currency. I hope to see good things from this project.

Thanks Jack, cool, sounds like you've quite the setup.  Agreed that is seriously warped over 1bit.  Wonder if it was a hit and run or part of a overall sweep, glad you alerted them to your case.

As I've never yet received a payout, might change my setting to 0.01BTC so as to get one soon.  See if any of that powder ever really does turn to gold...opps mean silver, like in enough to cover 20 transaction fees....

Ok while typing, see some more posts from you came in, good tips also, I've never received any emails, ever from Slush's site, also signed up in March.  Hmmm, will take a real close look at that and change my addresses just to see if it causes any emails.

@btcgriffin - Looks like you've got some serious fun going on there, nice looking site & easy to use for those with a gambler twist, unfortunately not into it myself.  However willing to bet, your likely going to do well!

@gatehades - Suggest you re-evaluate what you think is meant by the phrase 'real money', that concept was pretty much phased out in the 1960's when the US left the gold standard, other countries have various stories, but all have pretty much converged on this point in time into the same worthless & centrally controlled fiat currency system, that is what is now near death.  BitCoin offers the ultimate challenge to that authority, don't expect the ride to be smooth, as we wrestle that control from the few.  It won't be.

I've been struggling as well as to how to deal with this issue translating funds between currency concepts, creating a Dwolla account seemed like one of only a few, whom other here deal with, definitely now decided against ever creating an account there, also been learning allot from watching these BitCoin shows, see Episode 28 & 31 for more on that topic & allot of history on the BitCoin story, things like 'who is TradeHill', they've come and all but been crushed already, seemed to me a good bunch of guys.  Lots of good background, for a great many topics, especially for folks like us here that missed the 2010-2011 part of the BitCoin Story.  Mod's hope links like this, are ok here to post:
http://onlyonetv.com/category/shows/the-bitcoin-show/

Ok nice to meet you all, I'm out of here, as this thread is best kept for introductions and so I might drop by from time to time, but other than that, hope to visit again with more of you, on lots of other threads!

I really do think this might be happening to others right now and goes deeper than just someone else knowing my password. The reason I believe this is because anytime you change your wallet address you will receive an email with a link in it. Not only did I not receive an email once for the bitcoin address change, I didn't receive one for my namecoin address change either. As soon as I noticed the problem and changed the addresses back to the correct ones...I immediately received the verify emails for both types of addresses. Unless the person went into my emails and deleted them before I checked my emails, I believe they are working internally and preventing the verify emails from being sent to account holders.

I hope I am wrong and this is and isolated incident but if someone could please contact slush and get him to start looking into this asap that would be awesome. I can't post yet in the slush pool forum because I just registered, any help would be awesome. Thank you everyone for responding to my posts.

For about the first six weeks of mining I was only using a radeon 4850 getting about 92 mh/s. Almost 2 weeks ago I bought a radeon 5850 for $137.50 and it produces about 383 mh/s. The combined 475 mh/s has started giving me a bitcoin in a little over 3 days depending on how lucky slush's pool is. Needless to say I'm pretty bummed about losing 20% of my total earned bitcoins. Just to let you know the person had unchecked the box that says something like "notify me by email when I receive a payout". I still haven't heard back from anyone yet about the issue, but it's only been about 4 or 5 hours since I emailed them about it. I hope this hasn't happened to many people. One more thing before I go....I'm seriously really surprised that this happened to me because I figured I wouldn't even be considered for such an attack because of how slow my current mining speeds and the fact that I have my threshold at 1. Seriously 1 Freaking bitcoin? Talk about a desperate little coward and a pitiful excuse for a thief!

Slush's pool had a security issue back in March. If you've been mining for 8 weeks, it happened after you suscribed:

Maybe someone just managed to break the encryption and get your password. In that case, whatever he find is good I guess.

New to the forum, but have been studying Bitcoin for a 4-5 months now. I'm just now to the point where I feel comfortable obtaining the actual coins. Have done a couple trades from Dwolla to Mt. Gox, but Dwolla may be out for my next transaction, given their new policies. Anyway, thanks for maintaining this wonderful Bitcoin resource.

Hi everyone, I'm starting up a VPN service that will accept Bitcoin as payment. This will be an experiment for me in both Bitcoin and hosting services, so I look forward to participating in the community.  Tongue

@Jack1Rip1BurnIt - Seriously thanks much for signing up & reporting.  Felt so confused about BitCoins after first installing my Wallet, felt compelled to understand the basics, so started mining a little with Slush, have no modern GPU, so picked cpu mining and only run it occasionally on one old machine, however it's still taken me >2weeks to accumulate even 0.004BTCs @ 2.7MH/s  Would be really bummed over it's loss.  Mining returns of 1.0BTC would be huge to me, sorry to hear of your loss.  Other than as a learning exercise, I've no interest in mining, as with so,so many folks, in the days gone by, attempting to make it rich by finding a mountain full of precious mineral veins is unlikely, it will be the general stores, farmers and bar keeps which made the most out of those times & I suspect again with this modern bitcoin boom...

Hi, I finally just registered on this forum...something I should have done months ago. The reason I finally chose today is because someone changed my bitcoin address on my profile on slush's pool. I only lost 1 bitcoin today because of it, but that is 1 bitcoin more than I wanted to lose! I am in the process of changing my password, but the site is not letting me do so. I fear maybe the website has been hacked. Hopefully I hear back from someone soon. Just letting you guys know
