WOW, thank you for posting this... do we have any global lists of companies or storefronts that accept Bitcoin? I'm interested in promoting this as well.

Aha.  Sorry, I didn't catch that nuance in the scope of the list.  Maybe if I can find the time, I could start similar lists for POFs, churches, and other similar organizations.

Sounds like a GREAT idea to me!  Really!  I know others, too, that would like to see similar lists for other kinds of groups.  I have to believe these are only a help to our community.

Here's a new one for your list.  ...  Northern California DX Foundation
Thanks for the suggestion, Tim. It may seem like a small technicality, but you see that this organization is a Private Operating Foundation (POF), instead of a Public Charity (PC) -- and thus falls outside the limitation of this list.

Here's a new one for your list.  Long-time 501(c)(3) supporting amateur radio and scientific expeditions, as well as a scholarship fund.  Just started accepting bitcoins a few weeks ago.

Northern California DX Foundation : 94-2853576 : Cupertino, CA : ncdxf.org (http://ncdxf.org)

Thanks!

Thank you for the list.
Do you know if there is also some environmental group ( legit, honest and possibly no catastrophic ) which accepts Bitcoin as donation option?

Q: Why not a 508(c)(1)(A) church organization?
...
A: The 508s are tax excepted (mandatory exceptions). This means that you don't apply, rather you register. As long as you remain non-profit, you are hands off with regard to the IRS.

Asked and answered.

There's little point to having a list like this for churches, since
* Nearly all are excepted, anyway; and,
* Nearly all are so limited in location and influence, that they command little broad, national interest for donations.

Public charities are quite different.
* There are perhaps equally large numbers of registered [501(c)(3)] and unregistered ones; and,
* Most of the registered ones have a broad, national appeal to at least an like-interest-specific group of contributors.

That's one of the reasons for limiting this resource to only registered public charities.  Anyone is free to make a similar list of all the churches accepting bitcoin.  That's just not in the restricted scope of this list.

Why not a 508(c)(1)(A) church organization?

A 501(c)(3) is for corporations, which are organized for religious or benevolent purposes. Check what the law says.

A 508(c)(1)(A) is listed below in part. The whole thing can be found at: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/USCODE-2011-title26/pdf/USCODE-2011-title26-subtitleA-chap1-subchapF-partII-sec508.pdf .

Quote
(c) Exceptions
(1) Mandatory exceptions
Subsections (a) and (b) shall not apply to—
(A) churches, their integrated auxiliaries,
and conventions or associations of churches,
or
(B) any organization which is not a private
foundation (as defined in section 509(a)) and
the gross receipts of which in each taxable
year are normally not more than $5,000.

The point is, 501s are tax exempt. This means that you apply to the IRS for your status of exemption, and they can dictate the rules.

The 508s are tax excepted (mandatory exceptions). This means that you don't apply, rather you register. As long as you remain non-profit, you are hands off with regard to the IRS.

Most of the churches in the United States have been deluded by lawyers and bankers into thinking that they need be a 501 corporation. If they remained churches rather than becoming corporations, it would be hands-off regarding the IRS.

I'm kind of disheartened since I was so enthusiastic in convincing the guys at AiA to start accepting bitcoin, telling them how bitcoin crowd is all altruistic and happy to show love to new merchants... However, so far they got zero bitcoin donations (not counting mine). Can I ask you kindly to please consider sending a few kilobits their way. They are genuinely awesome people working with children all over the world and helping make their lives a bit more beautiful. You can see some jaw dropping photos on their website and learn more about their programs that encourage creativity, tolerance and cultural exchange among children all over the planet. I have no interest in this, other than sincerely wishing for them to be showered with money because they really deserve it and they will put it to good use.
Thanks for posting, Gold. I just sent a small donation; hopefully others will do the same. Their web site makes it easy. I've thought before.. maybe I should do periodic walkabouts, just making some small donations, especially to the lesser known charities on this list. Thanks for reminding me to do that.

I've found I hold my wallet a little closer to my chest these days, what with the price doldrums that put me underwater on my average cost basis. Maybe others are there with me.  And of course, a lot of people are their most generous during the holiday and end-of-the-year tax season that's fast approaching us again.  Hopefully we will all be more enthusiastic givers again soon.

All that Bitcoin 100 endowed found here http://bitcoin100.org/charities/ were vetted to make sure that they were registered NGOs.
Just to be clear: 'Registered NGO' does not equal '501(c)(3)/U.S. Tax-Deductible'. And this list only includes the latter.

The Bitcoin 100 list was the first collection of candidates that I started checking out.  There are actually a few different lists around that present a good resource for finding NGOs/non-profits/charities that accept bitcoin.  Giving to those is a good thing, to be sure.  They're just not necessarily tax-deductible for U.S. donors, and donations to them are not exempt from long-term capital gains treatment.

I'd love to add our nonprofit: PeaceTones: 20-2683134
I'm sorry, but--on the EO Select Check--your organization name does not correspond with the EIN, as it must for inclusion in this list. Perhaps you miscopied the number?
