Scammers are everywhere. We have to stay away from from them. So Invest In any new project without researching about their team and project. Then it's your fault. In this world everyone is not honest or everyone is not scammers so we have to find good for our profit and stay away from scammer.
The safest currency for investment for me will always be BTC, it is the first option, then I would go for ETH and continue for Monero, Zen, Zcash, I say these privacy coins because I know that in some years investors will seek to be more anonymous, It will no longer matter so much how many cryptocurrencies you have or how many BTC, what will matter will be how you can do to transfer all that amount of money safely and that they are not tracked.

Altcoin only safer for short investment and not for long term investment. For longterm investment, I prefer to take BTC, GOLD and some bluechip of stocks. In 2017 alot of altcoin pumped hard but in 2018 turned to dumped hard, only investors who did understand the trend of market and did not greedy make money here. And for holder/ investor who did FOMO and greedy, they are possible to get loss above 90% because the trend of market anytimes can be changing.
