The key to any investment is to know the risk you're taking on and invest what you can and do feel comfortable with relative to that risk. There are alternatives to Bitcoin that also may suit you, particularly Litecoin and Ethereum. And as a debatable third tier you could look at Monero and Dash. Each has unique features that expand upon Bitocin's features and have widespread cache among the crypto currency crowd.
