Nothing is safer than a hardware wallet. Bitcoin core is safe as long as your taking safe ways to access your account. That includes safekeeping your key and accessing your account to a malware free device.

Yes Bitcoin core is the official wallet of Bitcoin so it is one of the safest wallet for storing your Bitcoins, however there it is not a safe place if your pc/desktop is infected by malwares and viruses. For me it doesn't matter if you use the official wallet or hardware wallet as long as the wallet provides you the private key, the security of the Bitcoins is still depends on the user on how careful he is, if you are careless even you use the safest wallet out there, you can't say that it is safe. If you are planning to use Bitcoin core better have a new desktop and don't use it on browsing the web and don't connect any device (usb, external hard drives) to it.

Nothing is safe, everything on the internet is fragile. Not only on the internet, even a physical vault in a Bank isn't totally safe.
If you keep thinking about those things then you will also be paranoid about everything, even for the most trusted wallet that also the official one which is bitcoin core.

Anyway, here's a useful link to answer your question.

You clearly didn't search it everywhere knowing the fact that you haven't successfully found the answer.

I think the core wallet is safe but you can not make sure that the wallet you trust can still be a scam. It takes a little bit of technical knowledge to get started with the Bitcoin Core wallet, but when it comes to security the original bitcoin wallet is still hailed by many as one of the safest places to keep your funds. Read our review to find out whether Bitcoin Core is the right wallet for you.

The Bitcoin Core wallet is very safe, you can download it from bitcoin.org.
Make sure that you verify the signatures before running the installer/executable as you don't want to coins be stolen because of faulty software.

Just to add - the OP should ensure his wallet is encrypted with a strong password & that limits his online activities on that PC. Hackers are very good at what they do these days, I rarely use the computer I have Core on for anything except bitcoin. Basically what I’m saying is don’t visit sites you aren’t 110% sure are safe & don’t download or click on any files.

You can’t be overly paranoid when your bitcoin’s are at stake.

Make sure your signature and hash are correct before you save the bitcoin or create your private key with it. It must be safe as long as you download it from the official site and make sure the signature of the file is the same. Safe because continuous monitoring is done from people who review the client code, which is openly available.

Try to download bitcoin core from bitcoin.org. And yes its safe, many of bitcoin holders uses this kind of wallet. But as for me i use the regulated wallet from our country because it can access on banks and many online stores too.

It is a desktop wallet and any desktop wallet is as safe as your PC. So, if you feel the security of your PC is out of date, then you better not bother yourself. You should also know that this is a heavy wallet and I wonder why you would have to go through all that stress when you can download a light one or just go the cold storage way as that is safer. However, it is your choice.
