The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 764.13 points, or 2.25%, to 33,202.22 — in its worst day since September as hopes for a year-end rally diminished. The S&P 500 dropped 2.49% to 3,895.75, bringing its decline for December to about 4.5%. The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 3.23% to 10,810.53 as the battered tech-heavy index stretched its 2022 losses to nearly 31%.

The sell-off was broad-based with only 14 stocks in the S&P 500 trading in positive territory. Mega-cap tech stocks declined, with shares of Apple and Alphabet down more than 4%, while Amazon and Microsoft were lower by more than 3%. Shares of Netflix fell 8.6% following a Digiday report that said the streaming firm is offering to return money to advertisers after missing viewership targets.

The disappointing retail sales report suggested inflation is taking a toll on consumers. Retail sales fell 0.6% in November, according to the Commerce Department. That was a bigger loss than the Dow Jones estimate of a 0.3% decline.

The selling began Wednesday in the wake of the Fed's latest boost in its overnight borrowing rate. The central bank also said it will continue hiking rates through 2023 and projected its fed funds rate to peak at a higher-than-expected 5.1%. With Wednesday's half a percentage point hike, the targeted range for rates is currently 4.25% to 4.5%, the highest in 15 years.

"The equity market's reaction is now factoring in a recession, and rejecting the possibility of the 'soft/softish' landing mentioned recently by Powell at the [Brookings Institution]," Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist at LPL Financial, wrote Thursday.

He said that's part of the "broad story about the economy we're building that works for everyone." Peter Schiff has a different take on the economy. He recently appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show to talk about it.

Peter pointed out that if Donald Trump were still president, Biden would be criticizing the state of the economy. And he said he thinks the economy is in "horrible shape."

"I think that's one of the reasons President Biden is so unpopular. Because I think a lot of the people who are struggling in this economy, in part, blame the president. He's not solely responsible, but he certainly hasn't done anything to help. Everything he's done has actually taken a bad situation and made it worse."

Americans are clearly struggling. Peter noted the plunging savings rate and skyrocketing credit card debt.

"Americans have blown through all their stimulus money, and now they're pretty much broke. If you look at credit card debt, it's at an all-time record high. So, Americans are struglling to put food on the table and to pay the electric bill."

The clarity of winning and losing creates a clarity of analysis about who is doing well and who isn’t.

If you apply that simple model to Biden, you realize how well he is doing by his own definition of success.

We dislike Biden so much, we pettily focus on his speaking difficulties, sometimes strange behavior, clear lapses of memory, and other personal flaws. Our aversion to him and his policies makes us underestimate him and the Democrats.

But remember: Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan both preferred to be underestimated. Both wanted people to think of them as pleasant – but not dangerous. They found being underestimated was a major asset. While people laughed at them, they were busy achieving their goals and getting their programs implemented.

Biden has achieved something similar.

Joe Biden and the Democrat-controlled Congress, all of whom claimed for decades to be ‘friends of the unions,’ just passed a major piece of legislation screwing over unionized rail workers, and many of them are not about to take that lying down.

In order to avoid what appeared to be a looming rail strike — which, to be sure, would have been devastating to the U.S. economy, especially during the holiday shopping season since so much of what consumers use travels by rail — Congress passed and Biden signed a bill aimed at heading off that strike.

But, according to The Hill, the legislation did not address key rail worker concerns, and as a result, there appears to be a growing number of railroad personnel preparing to walk off the job and leave the industry altogether, which will have the same kind of collapsing effect on an already shaky supply system.

“The exit of thousands of train conductors and engineers would be felt by major corporations and U.S. consumers alike. It could slow the delivery of food, fuel, and online orders while strangling already-shaky supply chains,” the outlet noted on Tuesday.

“I don’t think you’ll just see half of the workforce disappear, but you’ll see a good percentage, and we can’t afford for anybody to leave because we’re so undermanned as it is,” Hugh Sawyer, an Atlanta-based engineer at Norfolk Southern, told The Hill in an interview.

Just last month, rail experts and industry officials were warning that even a strike of just a few days would create a multitude of cascading events that would devastate entire sectors of society and the economy, since much of what the nation needs and utilizes travels by rail.

“Businesses integral to our normal day-to-day life, like food and fuel manufacturers, will feel the impact immediately and will quickly trickle down to consumers,” Jeffrey Hausman, the chief product officer at the supply chain management firm Samsara, told NBC News.
