I also hope that if/when this becomes a reality that he opens it up to the press and allows pictures and such to be taken. I love seeing these massive mines.

Anyone know if you can tour one of the mines in Washington state?  Grin

A 10 petahash mining farm would not mine a block as often as others, but it would still make a big difference, almost 1% of the total hash power if I'm not wrong. Let's see if he will make a ROI...

The total is 1530P at the moment. But the time he built the mining farm, the total could be 3000PH/s.

For him that sort of purchase is probably a drop in the bucket. I don't think anyone will think negatively if he does it, it will just bring more attention to BTC.

all attention is good attention , the more people that hear about bitcoin the better Smiley so i agree with you Smiley

He should have gotten into it sooner, not right after the halving.
It still might do some good in convincing other people to start up large scale mining, but only if he's successful..

A lot of people are going on and on about the Chinese having dominance over Bitcoin mining and now someone from the USA are getting into it, people have doubts about it. I reckon the Roger Ver connection might have something to do with this. I welcome any kind of investment into Bitcoin mining, no matter what side gets involved. The bigger the network, the more secure and robust. ^smile^

An Asicminer Blade is 10GH, so 1 PH is 100,000 of these. That is a lot of hash power to mine bitcoin.

No one mined with Asicminer Blades since forever, because obsolete.
Asicminer folded & ran away with people's coin a couple of years ago.
The current hashrate is 1,529,415,029 GH/s or about 1,529 PH/s.
10 PH is less than 1%.

So if McAfee is planing on a mine that has a < 1% hashrate of all bitcoin mines, would that be a big one?
What hashrates do the biggest existing ones have at the moment? Anybody knows that?

He belongs to older generation. Although he keeps make news, but most are not that impressive, including presidential bid, iphone hack. But if he want to mine Bitcoin, I will say why not, the more hashing power, the better Bitcoin will be.

Like has already been said this guy is a maverick if anyone else said this i would laugh but with this guy it could actually happen......  Wink

As much as I love this guy, he is always doing a but too much. Presidential bids, blockchain security and now this? I'm hoping this works, only because Mr. McAfee is in a place like Chuck Norris to me. But he could actually pull this off, and this isn't the first time he has expressed interest in BTC.

If he is rich, and if he can afford himself some expensive fun, why not? Maybe he can make something good with this, and I doubt he is alone in this. Probably he have several assistants, or advisors, lawyers.. so he probably have some strategy or business plan for this to work.
If I'm rich I would probably invest in bitcoins, I will follow his progress. We need to give him time, and we will see his results in year or two. Anyway this is good news, rich people finally started to invest in bitcoins.

I wonder,if we can find somewhere the date of launching this enormous mine.
Because i would like to check,if the transactions will really speed up,i really hope so because faster confirmations would be great!

John McAfee is not rich by coincidence, this guy is smart and he sees the importance of becoming an established miner. He is the first non-chinese to start a massive mining operation to try to compete against them. That's how it's done. We need more non-chinese people to start playing on the mining game to even it out.

John McAfee is planing a BTC mining farm with 10 Petahash/s

What do you think? Is he really going to do this?
And will something change if this "freak" will be a miner?

John McAfee wants to compete with the Chinese miners so that's a cool thing.

We should all agree to stay groovy and foolish when we r so very rich as with the McAfees.

Some fun can be very good

This is good news that someone outside China is trying to compete. However, just wonder how much he will be paying to build the mining site and how long it will take to be up and running? With the reward being halved just a few days ago, maybe this is not a profit driven mission?

I think John McAfee could still profit, as long as he can have minimal power to used, like in the case of renewable energy plus with this halving, some miner will discourage to ine maybe Smiley This man is wealthy, and I think he is on spending spree Smiley

the question is why did he take him so long to join the btc ship ? or even better what did he knows about and decide to join , but then again since he used to be an IT/programmer guy.. maybe just for hobby and a little profit.. OR maybe he will roll his own crypto-currency ??
we shall see sooner or later ! Cool

If his plan to  start a BTC mining farm, that would be exciting and what would be his impact on bitcoin cryptocurrency community? Will other IT/Tech companies follows? (Some already did Smiley ) BTW, I forgot, he is also a programmer and maybe he is sold to the idea of cryptocurrency as this is the future. From his name and popularity alone, even if he create his own coin, it will surely hit the market Smiley Good Luck to him. Smiley

10 petahash is very much. who was the peoples to have a lot money for buying miner farm for it.

of course it will have an impact on people who have hashrate under 10 petahash

After the 10 petahsh is built, that is less than 1% of the network rate. I saw HaoBTC already has 5 PTH/s.

My math may be off a bit but...

10PH would be about 715 S9's. At $2400 each thats $1.7 million in hardware.
Each S9 is about 1400 watts which is just over 1 megawatt of power in total - not including cooling.
At $0.10/kw that would be $72,000 a month in electric. Now there is no way he would pay that.
At $0.03/kw that would be $21,600 a month in electric which is closer to what he will probably get, if not cheaper.

Quite interesting if it actually pans out.

10 Petahash/s?? how much zero is that? as always, money can help you make everything you want. with much of money, i think John will be make it happen, and i think he already done that before he said that into public.

i think later John will make mining farm and sell the hashrate into public, and if this come true, i just wish the price is cheap hahaha
if you want to learn about peta hashes and many more then here i found some thing about it Smiley https://standardcrypto.wordpress.com/2013/09/15/what-does-one-petahash-look-like/
