Article on the LBC in Fortune magazine.  Not researched terribly well.

http://fortune.com/2017/04/15/bitcoin-collider/

"The group has successfully opened over a dozen wallets, though only three had any bitcoin in them."

LOL. Well, now we at least know which magazines are worth reading and which not.

VICE Motherboard, bitcoin.de at least did contact me and ask questions via email and did not alter the answers too much.
Fortune.com ... wow. Just wow. 2nd guessing with pulling things out of their ass.

BTW: I find out easily these days if a new article about the collider appears. All of the sudden the "About page" is called slightly more frequently.  Cheesy

this article is ridiculous. At least research correctly before posting such nonsense.

"It's unclear if the group is motivated by financial gain or the cryptographic challenge of smashing wallets—the answer is probably both based on the site's webpage and outside observers."

BTW, has anyone else noticed that when you hit 'e' it starts another entire loop before ending?

Yes.  Smiley

It's documented - admittedly somewhere buried in this thread.

Since the generator has a so called loop mode (which made it faster by eliminating startup-times), LBC cannot stop it during a round as it evaluates keyboard input buffer after a round - also to spare CPU cycles.
I'm thinking about a way better mechanism that would allow for a) immediate ending and b) not losing work done so far, but that needs more work and there are other pressing things.

So until then, pressing "e" means your LBC client will end gracefully in 100-200% of the time X you gave with -t X (depending on when you press the key).

Thanks heaps Patrick349, rico666 & Real-Duke.

The German post helped heaps.  I was getting confused with the hex addition part.
Really appreciate it!

Quick question, please excuse my ignorance on this ... I've searched everywhere and can't really find an answer.

If (hopefully when) I receive my found.txt with the priv key in hex, how do I convert that to a WIF?
Is there something simple I'm completely missing here? I'm terrible at math so hopefully there's a tool to do this.

https://lbc.cryptoguru.org/man/user  -> click on "Found!"

RealDuke wrote a HowTo in the german thread https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.18382804
should be self-explanatory, otherwise Google Translate (may be) your friend.

Rico

Or like posted before on https://www.bitaddress.org/ and here click "Wallet Details" for an online converter of the hexkey

@TooDumbForBitcoin

About the Motherboard article: No matter how hard one tries, there's always some precision lost in these articles, so "experts" should take them with a grain of salt. Effectively it's just a superficial introduction to the broader public. It's my contribution so scribes also get something to do for a living. Wink

Rico

It's usually sobering for me to read a "MSM" article about a subject I know a little more about, relative to the general reading audience.  Extrapolating the inaccuracies one notices in areas of their own expertise to all "MSM" articles makes one realize that "MSM" articles are generally poor sources for unbiased or technically accurate reporting.

Glad to see this is still going. I come to check this thread every so often, it's always a good read. Wondering if Rico is going to start a multisig one next  Cheesy

All Multisig hash160 have been part of the bloom filter we check against for the past month or so.
