Haven't use the nano ledger s in a few months.  Decided to download ledger live as people say and i read you should use it.  When i did this, it ask on the ledger screen to update or not to firmware 1.4 after i clicked update on the laptop.  I then right clicked on the nano ledger s with the check mark.  When i did this, all i see on my laptop screen is ledger live with everything white.  I could close it by x it but i did not.  Right now it shows ledger live but screen is white.

My ledger nano s... it has like a download logo showing on the screen and to the right of it, has the word Update.

So did my firmware update frozed?  I still have ledger s connected to my laptop.  Did not unplug or click anything yet because i have no idea what to do now.  Last time i did a firmware update and it frozed and it took a while to fix this issue.  Does anyone know ledger s keeps having issues like this?  This is very annoying and frustrating for a device that is a hardware wallet.  Why are there this many bugs etc?

Hi - my update is also stuck and none of the suggestions above seem to work. The ledger just displays "updating" while the manager thinks for a moment and then says, "unable to install firmware"

I have checked the device manager for anything needs new drivers. Please advise? I can't find any other solutions, it seems bricked.

To be able to help you, please answer the following questions:

  • Does it also give a 'insufficient memory' error ?
In this case: Remove a few applications from your nano s. You can install them afterwards again. Your coins stay safe.

  • Did you use an USB port from the back of your PC (assuming you aren't on a laptop/tablet) ?
Those directly at the mainboard are the ones most guaranteed to work properly.

  • Did you use the original ledger cable ?
Some cables you may know from mobiles phones are charge-only cables (they don't have the data pins).

  • Did you actually check the device manager for a yellow exclamation mark?

  • Do you hear a sound when plugging in your nano s ?

  • What is your current firmware version ?

You are updating from 1.3 to 1.4.1 or to 1.4.2,or maybe you have even older version of firmware and what OS you are using? If there is problem with drivers and you can not solve them try to use other PC to update firmware.

Are you sure there is no any yellow warning in device manager?Be sure to try disconnect Ledger Nano S and to close Ledger Manager in Chrome, then start Ledger Manager and before you connect Ledger Nano S hold left button(one close to USB port). Also try to use other USB port on your PC if you have more then one.

IIRC they said they had also removed some of those confusing messages, which should make the process cleaner.

Indeed, the update to 1.4.2 does contain the following improvements:

  • Improving user pin security
(by randomizing starting number when entering pin to unlock device)
  • Improving recovery phrase security
(basically same as above, just with the first letter of a seed word)
  • Getting rid of confusing error messages
  • Improving application checks

Ledger is slowly (but steadily) increasing the quality of their product.
Almost each update does bring (useful) changes for end user. Either by making it more secure or convinient.

My update to 1.4 was painless honestly. I'm sure that I could be an outlier but I don't really think it's that bad.
Yeah... Personally, I think it was the somewhat confusing error messages that some people got (where is stuck on "update" etc)... plus the servers being overloaded that make the process a bit painful for some.

As for the most recent update, all I had to do was delete a few of the coin apps via Ledger Manager so there was room for the firmware updater app... other than that, it went without issue.

Because re-entering in the whole seed is a bitch, and much more time-consuming than just removing a few apps with the manager, then adding them back.

Judging by the amount of heart ache some people seem to experience when attempting to update I'd still favour the nuclear option myself.

Why aren't people simply wiping it completely before even attempting the firmware upgrade? I wouldn't bother dicking around removing individual apps. I'd simply nuke it and start again from scratch. Just do the wrong pin three times and you have a blank slate.

Obviously make sure you have your seed in order beforehand.

That seems unnecessarily complicated. I have updated my Ledger at least 4 times (maybe more?) since I bought it, and each time just followed the instructions to wipe the individual apps, download and install the new firmware, and reinstall the apps, and had absolutely zero issues on any occasion. My seed is split and stored securely across multiple locations - it would be a total hassle to have to retrieve and then re-secure it everytime I wanted to update.

My issue is kinda different.
I had to press developer mode to remove bitcoin testnet so i can begin install firmware.
I finished install firmware but it did not ask me any seed words.
So, i installed back ether, btc etc. Then it said i have to install new firmware and i installed without deleting apps.
Now is stuck on screen update. I tested everything. I even installed windows 10 from win 7.
Nothing working, if i start in MCU it sees the serial of MCU, but returns error on update screen. I am unable to erase and restart ledger since only this screen i see.
USB ports are not yellow, everything working good.
Another symptom is after update fail message if i press developer mode it say i have the latest firmware, but if i go at apps says the list is empty and pop the message below with install new firmware.
I tested on a laptop also, same story.
That log throws some errors about java coding. I forgot password from ledger official website and their forgot password system not sending me email to reset password.
Cannot even open a ticket to get support from ledger company.

You have some strange problems, what version of firmware you have and to what version you are updating?Do you try to uninstall Ledger Manager and install latest version from Ledger Site?Usually the problem with stuck on update is related with driver problems, check my post in this thread(Number 7).

You do not need to be log in to send ticket to Ledger support, just visit this link : Ledger Support Center, but I would not have high hopes in their support. It is much better to open thread in Reddit LedgerWallet, and ask for help there.

After checking on this thread and solving the driver problem (USB-device with a yellow explaination mark) in fact after a while I have managed to complete the update, and now my Nano Ledger S is fully working again. However, still it is a shame that support of Nano Ledger would not point to this solution in their how-to instructions on their website and we had to come here to find a solution. Many thanks of course to those who have posted the solution here.

While it is true that ledger should have this solution posted in their FAQ, this problem is not related to the nano s itself.
It is a problem with the combination of the nano s and windows.

As far as i know this problem does not occur on linux/mac systems. Only windows is affected.

But I must say that after a few hours of having sent a support request I have received from them an email with the correct solution. I had already solved the problem, but this means they are actually supportive. What they would have done, as you say, is to prevent all these losses of time by placing the info in their FAQ.

Same shit happening to me - this is a shame, now I cannot access my funds any more, everything is blocked. This is NOT what one would expect from a product like Nano Ledger.

Did you actually check the device manager if one USB-device has a yellow explaination mark beside it?
If so, you simply need to open the properties and 'install the driver' (windows USB-driver; should be done automatically by windows).

If this is not the case: Are you able to access the ledger manager? Or is your nano s completely stuck?

If you really need to access your funds asap, you can simply import your seed into another wallet (e.g. electrum [1]).
But consider your seed as compromised from this moment on. When moving your funds back to the ledger, you should create a new seed.

Edit:

After 1+ hour of "upgrade" I stuck first on Restoring MCU/Bootloader,after 20 min I close Ledger Manager and disconnect Ledger. Then I move to Update screen, but nothing on LM.There seems to be a problem with Ledger drivers,so if you are on Windows go to Control Panel\System and Security\System >Device manager and under Human Interface Devices - USB Input Device check for any device with yellow mark/click on remove. Then open Ledger Manager and connect Ledger, you should see processing on Ledger screen and for me it was finished in 2-3 minutes.

Thank you so much for this post. I though my ledger nano was broken or something and I emailed support but then I came here, tried what you did and the problem is solved now.

Much faster that Ledger support.

You're welcome,I was in same situation like you and I was thinking that I brick my Ledger at one point. But fortunately there were some users who had the same problems so I found the solution. It is obvious that the process of firmware upgrade did not go smoothly for most of users-but it was mostly dependent on an individual user and his OS,device or Ledger servers at some point.

I also must say that based on my experience Ledger support is not of some help,in fact all that can interest the user is available on their site,so before contact them it is better to check their knowledge base.

I've seen them be more responsive on their subreddit, I think it's /r/ledgerwallet. You'll have better chances of finding someone else that's had the same problem too.
