This 2 BTC contribution appears to belong to FooBaer who was still asking for his to be doubled yesterday afternoon. Clearly not doubled yet, and clearly doesn't explain the claimed 4 BTC double 3 days ago.

Well spotted.

No, definitely not ianbakewell.  Has to be a lie.

The funny thing is that transaction d23b8ec28b10902d5882acc6e2a96418698fa571032bfa459ba417f9929a4e04 paid out 4 BTC before any 2 BTC deposit to the game address ever happened.  So he's not even doubling a pretend deposit to himself - he's doubling nothing.

Here's a summary of the 2 bets of 2 BTC and the 2 doubles to 4 BTC in the order they happened:

doubled nothing to 4 BTC:

The double was not to myself as ianbakewell can confirm

No, definitely not ianbakewell.  Has to be a lie.

Post number 10 BiMofo lies claiming Another doubled for 4 BTC:
Another doubled:
Debit: -4.00 BTC
Transaction ID: d23b8ec28b10902d5882acc6e2a96418698fa571032bfa459ba417f9929a4e04
Over 6 BTC doubled so far! Any more players?

Post number 31 ianbakewell plays for the first time claiming "ill give it a try"
Let's see, ill give it a try

Post number 33 ianbakewell has not yet been paid and reminds BitMofo that his 2 BTC transfer is confirmed
Date: 12/09/2012 13:09
Debit: -2.00 BTC
Transaction ID: 5ebbb89198062454c20bb24fefca4bfd2b1bcf142b67fa0f2689af832280717b
Fully confirmed now

Post number 45 BitMofo sends ianbakewell's 4 BTC
To: 114kWBPqiboAKcb4Ms65ZrVHcP1s1jFEXG
Debit: -4.00 BTC
Transaction ID: 062a48f0baff05c3ed09fbb0f7637f1d17619f21e7c9a366c5f2dcd8c5014839

The transaction in post number 45 is ianbakewell's.  The transaction in post number 10 is a provable lie.

Until now I didn't feel you deserved a scammer tag.  You've pretty much played the game exactly as you said you would.  There was never any guarantee that people would get paid, nor any indication on how quickly people would get paid.  There was nothing dishonest or misleading in this interaction, and I had fun playing the game.  If it isn't over yet, then I look forward to the continued possibility that I may yet get doubled.  If it is over, then I take my loss without any animosity towards you.

If you were just dropping a transaction or two of your own into the tip jar to get things started, I can understand it. However, if you are trying to say that you never sent coins to yourself and claimed that you were doubling someone, then you are misleading and representing a fraudulent statement.  I have no problem with the game, but intentionally lying and misleading people who are playing your game is a problem and may deserve a request for a scammer tag.

Date: 11/09/2012 23:53
To: 1CyKTdcEHjWtD9FuamThfQA2cjbHvYQnzy
Debit: -4.00 BTC
Net amount: -4.00 BTC
Transaction ID: d23b8ec28b10902d5882acc6e2a96418698fa571032bfa459ba417f9929a4e04

Over 6 BTC doubled so far! Any more players?

Did you mean this instead?

Transaction ID: 062a48f0baff05c3ed09fbb0f7637f1d17619f21e7c9a366c5f2dcd8c5014839

That looks to me like a payment from you to Ian.  The one you wrote doesn't.

Edit: Oh, but the payment to Ian was after your post about having paid Ian.  So that's confusing.

This transaction indicates that BitMofo owns address 1CyKTdcEHjWtD9FuamThfQA2cjbHvYQnzy
Then later BitMofo claims "Another doubled" sending 4 BTC to 1CyKTdcEHjWtD9FuamThfQA2cjbHvYQnzy

So the 4 BTC was just sent by BitMofo to himself.

I suspect that the lie was necessary to get the ball rolling, but it makes me wonder just how many more of the supposed doubles were "priming the pump" or sock-puppets.  Still hoping for mine to get doubled, but starting to think I'll have to write off my contribution.
Unless it was a double back to the same person?
- Max sends 1 BTC
- BitMofo sends 2 BTC back
- Max sends 2 BTC
- BitMofo sends 4 BTC back
I don't think so. Take a look at the posts:

Max sends 0.5 BTC from 1gdphm to BitMofo at 13plh
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/23573404/846d84f010b61c69996387d56ed1241c967d5476c5a04c469bf092d757162c06
Debit: -0.50 BTC

Then BitMofo sends 1 BTC from 1cyktdc back to Max at 1gdphm
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/23575563/4ed0269f3ed3d0131b474c7b33fde43bdf869b46c102494a7e7176cf52874c57
Doubled.

Then BitMofo sends 4 BTC to 1cyktdc claiming another double
https://blockchain.info/tx-index/23579274/d23b8ec28b10902d5882acc6e2a96418698fa571032bfa459ba417f9929a4e04
Another doubled:

If he can send from 1cyktdc when he sends 1 BTC to double Max's 0.5 BTC, then he MUST own the 1cyktdc address.
This can only mean that when he sent 4 BTC to 1cyktdc he was sending them to himself.

Like I said, it was probably necessary to get things going (much like a musician placing a few dollars in their own tip jar before they put it out). But that particular claim of doubling looks like an obvious lie. Perhaps that is the only lie, but the existence of that lie does make me wonder how many more lies there are in this game.  How many more false claims of doubling? How many sock-puppets?

Would people have played this differently if OP had written "I'm going to double everything sent to me - as soon as I can afford to do so using new payments"?  i.e. if he proclaimed up-front that it was a kind of a ponzi.

Yep. What's funny is he said that this is exactly what he was going to do from the beginning. I sent 1 BTC knowing full well I would 99% never see it again, but I'm a gambling man and thought if I could score a free 1 BTC out of it + the entertainment value then I'd get more than my money's worth. I think I still have gotten my money's worth, truth be told.  I can't wait for round 2!!

Pretty good "gamble" people seen the doubling got greedy started putting more coins up so where the OP just had to stop for a few hours n have more than he started with.  Well played.

I still haven't received a double:

Status: 186 confirmations
Date: 9/12/2012 12:56
To: bitmofo 13pLHUm8gPEN5H4xvTg8pqFHcr24ywzY1Z
Debit: -1.00 BTC
Transaction fee: -0.0005 BTC
Net amount: -1.0005 BTC
Transaction ID: 756838dd23c29285afb8eeab51b25973a874c0edaac0383f7b14b87580543608

Thought I would've been able to get in before BitMofo got out as it seemed like some transactions were being doubled after I had sent mine, but I do believe Mr. BitMofo has left the building with ~10BTC maybe? Maybe 5 BTC.  I was stuck in newbie lockdown until just now but I think the 1 BTC was gone the instant I sent the send button, regardless.  Enjoy your coins MOFO.

Looks like OP might have cashed out. Oh well, I'm at no gain or loss.
Seems to early to have cashed out yet.  All he has to do is pay a few off to reassure people that he is still doubling, and he should get more players.  I'd think he could keep that up for a week or so and significantly increase his take.

Heck, if I get doubled up, I'll just plow it right back in.  I wrote it off as a loss when I started, I figured I'd keep doubling my play until I reached his cap.
